My elders used condensed milk cans for that. But I've used bamboo and wooden sticks for my lines.

My grandfathers from both sides used other methods with no hooks but just to pull the fishes out from the water the minute the fishes took hold of the bait.

Works just as good for those easy fish, those of us that fish in Laos knows.. :

I think those of us that have had to really survive in Laos don't panic as much as the spoiled gens here...I used this method when we first arrived to America and was too poor to buy rod and reel (including turning the tab to a hook)  :
