Facebook Me vs. Real Me
« on: February 11, 2021, 03:48:51 PM »
This is nothing new to anyone or at least I hope it is not, but most of Social Media is full of exaggerations. Social Media depicts only the extremes of our situation and feelings, either we're super happy go lucky, having the time of our lives or we are in the gutter, hanging onto our dear lives while battling our spouses and contemplating suicide. These 2 extremes makes us feel inadequate if we let it, because our lives seems much more boring and uneventful when compared to others.

However, the truth is most of us live very normal, uneventful, simple lives and that SHOULD be enough. Just so everyone can put things into prospective (I.E. Hnub Lis Incident), here's a comparison of FB Me would be vs. Real Me for reference.

Facebook Me: A successful single 40+ Hmong Male, with lots of friends and a home and a very successful career with a huge retirement. I am always out with friends travelling to distant places and countries. You find me partying with lots of girls and always with a drink in my hand.

Real Me: I am an insecurity 40+ male with only a handful of friends. I have cheated on a pass girlfriend and was once married and failed at it. I travel, but i stay in mediocre hotels and prefer long hikes and nature, avoiding crowds and parties when possible. I rarely drink alcohol.

Even siblings may have their own unique characteristic s and strangers similarities..  But you are moving in the right direction, being your authentic self.  In the big picture of life and lasting relationships, that is key.

The problem with social media is that no matter what people post, others will interpret it however they choose to.

For example, if you only post positive things that happen in your life, people will think everything's great in your life. If they find out that (omg!) you aren't always happy, they may accuse you of being fake.

If you post about negative things in your life, or personal drama, others may think you are oversharing or a dramaqueen.

Personally, I think if people go by my facebook alone, I am living a pretty good life. However, like you stated, my life in general is pretty boring. It's just a matter of how people perceive what you post. My life isn't perfect, but it's not horrible. Having said that, I'm not going to be putting my personal problems out there for the world to see.

People just need to realize that they need to be taking everything on social media with a grain of salt. However, it's easier said than done. Anyone who says they don't judge others based on social media is either lying or a saint. :D ;D

Well said and super insightful, I might add.

And yes, above all, don't post your personal moments on Social Media. I have yet to meet a couple that can say Facebook was good therapy and it saved their marriage.

I met certain people that are the other way around.

Any social media: kind, extroverted, generous, talkative, unjudgmental
Real life: clingy, introverted, rude, liar, paranoid, perpetual, very judgmental

Houses WERE cheap. Now I can't find a decent house locally. You're vastly overpaying if you're looking for anything built after '98.
