What do you remember??
« on: February 16, 2021, 11:23:33 AM »
I grew up in the 90s, my teenage years. What comes to mind for you when you look back at Hmong people during that era??

1. Rise of Hmong Gangs.
2. Communal Apartment living, government housing.
3. Fresno New Years at the Park.
4. Going on a Date with a girl, meant going to her house for 2 hours.
5. Being a rebel meant; girls, coloring your hair blonde. Boys; having long hair.
6. Europe and  Vietnamese techno.
7. Toyota Supra and Celica.

True.

I met a girl at the new year festival and asked for her number. She told me to ask her mom for that. I did. Her mom gave me their address instead.

In the old days back in Laos, guys would go to a girl's wall outside her bed at night and whisper in to talk to her. That was traditional dating. I suppose going to
girl's house for two hours in the 90s was a version of that.

Many families were still on public assistance at the time, apartment complexes and government housing offered a cheap living alternative. It wasn't uncommon to have an entire apartment complex full of only Hmong, Laotians, Vietnamese or Cambodians living together. There was a good chance to meet someone you liked. I met 2 of my best friends this way, we're still friends til this day.

An older friend of mine at the time had a white 1985 Toyota Celica hatchback with the spoiler.  Anyone who had a Celica, Supra and Honda Prelude during in the early 90s was a god in my eyes. Funny how things change and what we thought was so cool at the time is only an after thought now.

The 90s? Feels like a lifetime ago.  :D ;D

I remember Nsync, BSB, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Mariah Carey, TLC, etc. My favorite song was "I Swear" back in junior high school. ;D

I remember lots of young teenage marriages- rumors of girls getting caught out with a boy and being forced to get married.

I remember July 4 being the pinnacle of summer break- seeing friends and family from all over come up. I remember blasting KLS all summer long.  ;D

I remember visiting a few college campuses with the h.s. counselor, Mr. Yang. :-X I remember assuming he wasn't Hmong because he didn't look Hmong. (If you're in here, thanks Mr. Yang! :D)

I remember watching the news, and seeing videos of the Tutsi killing the Hutu. :'(

I remember the days of dial up. :D I remember chatting in the AOL chatrooms. I remember getting disconnected when someone called the landline.  :2funny:

Oh the memories.  :D

Oh yes, that reminds me. My first cousin was forced to married her husband after losing her virginity to him. Looking back, it was barbaric, stupid and insane. They should have called the cops, charge him with rape with a minor and be done with it. She divorced now because he was an abusive prick.

Her family was well-to-do. They worked hard on the assembly line and she was a good student.

That's probably why they didn't want me to take her out--just in case I was old enough to abduct her.

My fear exactly. That's why I didn't date girls at all. Wasn't ready to pay child support yet.

80s

-Waking up to the sounds of Madonna, Michael and NKOTB on local radio every morning before school.
-Listening to the radio on Winter mornings for Snow Days. They were a godsend when you were a kid.
-Scraping together $0.25 for a twin pop from the ice cream truck. You were rich if you could afford the $1 Bomb Pops or chocolate eclairs.
-Long Summer days and cool Summer nights.
-True innocence and big dreams.
-Selling nuts for school fundraisers.
-Book fairs at school. Poor kids like me can always dream.
-Best. Love. Ballads. Ever.

90s

-Starter Jackets (New Era was for kids who couldn't afford Starter).
-Hmong gang violence.
-Young teenagers getting married.
-You started to notice the opposite sex.
-AOL, Netscape and Dial-up. I can still hear that damn screech. And my mom telling me to get off the phone line because she was expecting a call. Only wealthy families could afford 2 LAN lines.
-Asian Avenue and HOL. Damn if this wasn't the golden era of social media and internet chat for my generation.
-Crush on my friend. She, a cheerleader and popular. Myself, the kid who wore green Adidas (Larry Johson's Celtics gear) to school and was nicknamed The Gremlin for an entire high school day. Which was an eternity back than, pre-cell phone era.
-Alanis Morisette, TLC, Bone-Thugs & Harmony and Selena.
-Best. Pop. Songs. Ever.
-Best. Rap. Songs. Ever.

2000s

-First cars. Civics, Integras and turbos. You had to learn to talk the talk. Or have a loud exhaust that gave you an additional 5hp.
-First dates. Meeting girls/guys. Avoid getting caught. Some of us experienced our first kiss, first love and first heartbreak.
-Porn. Some of us saw the often talked about naked bits for the first time, irl or on the internet.
-College for many, first jobs for some and then we started drinking. Beers, Southern Comfort, Rumple Minze and Everclear. Some memories remain a little fuzzy.
-Sex. Many of us finally tried it. Always awkward and strange at first. And of course the universal "is that what it looks like?" singular thought in our heads when we first saw our partners, naked for the very first time.
-Apartments. Living at school or abroad. Who hated or loved their roommates?
-Wild parties and best friends. They go hand in hand.
-We broke out of our comfort zones, we broke rules and we broke ourselves down. Life is meant to be lived.
-Best. Pop. Love. Songs. Ever.

2010s
-We're old.
-The systems broken.
-We want to go back to any of the previous decades.

https://reason.com/2021/02/15/cops-arrest-mom-working-evening-shift-at-pizza-place-for-leaving-kids-ages-10-and-2-alone/

An Ohio mom has been arrested for leaving her kids, a 10-year-old and a 2-year-old, in a motel room while she worked her shift at a pizza shop.

A tip to the police led officers to a Motel Six in Youngstown at about 6:15 p.m. on Thursday night. The 10-year-old explained that her mom was working and would be home at 10:00 p.m.

The officers went to the pizza shop where the mom, Shaina Bell, 24, told them she usually has someone look in on the kids every hour. She was booked into jail on two counts of child endangerment and the kids were sent to their father. She got out on bail.

It's certainly not ideal for a mom to have to work at night while her 10-year-old babysits her little sister. But the facts—the motel room—seem to suggest that the family is under serious financial strain. And when that is the case, and there is a pandemic, and you are a mom trying to earn a living, it does not make your kids better off if you are under arrest, or in a cell, or possibly now contending with custody lawyers and the courts to get back on your feet.
