I think most Hmong families were put on public assistance when they first came to the States. Very few families chose to opt out, and the ones that never used public assistance were probably from well to do families already. I don't think it's something to be ashamed of if you have used public assistance.

I agree, there is no shame in asking for help when you truly need it. My problem with public assistance has to do with those who make a life of living on it and never ever attempts to better themselves. Public assistance should be used only when needed and should only be a stepping stone to help you get to bigger and better things in your life.

My parents were on public assistance when we first migrated here... because they didn't know the language, not a single word. But as with many of the stories on here, they wanted more and better things. Eventually they found jobs (manual labor at that), but the jobs gave them more income and more importantly, a real since of pride and self worth.

There will always be people who abuse the system. Those who do, probably have other issues.  :-X

To get back on topic, no one's life is as it appears so there's no need to be envious of those who might make more money than you do.

I don't make 6 figures. I also don't make minimum wage with respect to where I live. I have a single family house/home that I'm nearly done paying off. Like many, I grew up on food stamps and lived in Section 8 housing. Since the day I started working at the age of 14 with a worker's permit I told myself  that I want better. Post college which was in many ways a waste of time because I didn't really know what I wanted do. The first job to offer me 30k I took even though it didn't require a college degree. I've owned all new vehicles that are paid off. It sucked growing up driving unreliable vehicles and I vowed never to own any used or unreliable cars.

Currently I have enough money to where I can splurge on certain purchases because most of my investments are long-term geared towards retirement. No one knows how long we're going to live and so that's why I choose to splurge on my fishing gear(s) and hunting gear(s) and vehicles and clothes and shoes and jewelry and food(s).

Since quarantine I have a seafood boil almost every month if not every other week. I typically spend close to 300 dollars on these seafood boils from lobster tails to king crab. I spend a sh.it ton on fishing tackle and supplies only to catch and release because if I want to eat fish, I buy it from the store. Store bought fish aren't nasty looking like some of the fish some of you posted. Store bought fish and seafood have been inspected for safe consumption.

@ HmgRock, I grew up on KIX, Bar S hotdogs, primarily food bank foods. I don't mind eating that sh.it you posted but I don't want to do all that manual labor and shi.t just to eat it. I have over thousands of dollars worth of firearms and the only things I've shot are paper targets.  :2funny:

Fawk killed chickens. They're tough to chew. Cornish game hens in the double frozen packs that are soft and tender for the win!

You're missing out, best meat are those freshly butcher...anim al alive in the morning and BBQ in the afternoon (sorry vegetarian for the graphic descriptions).  I avoid those "soft and tender" chicken hahahhah...

BUT...it may be an "acquire taste" because my kids gave me the same rationale- why have to go through all that work for meat when you can just go buy it at the store ;D ;D ;D ;D  They don't see how the meat taste fresher, better, etc..

Honestly, I buy firearms because of my family and friends. They make it seem so cool to own it and since I have the money, sure why not. I haven't shot an animal yet with any of my firearms and I don't know how I truly feel about killing animals. I think, ok, I know I would rather buy meat from the store than to kill an animal. Killing is kind of scary with all of the blood and shi.t.

I've had it and I'll pass. I grew up on processed foods like Totinos Pizza. Cornish game hens are by far the best tasting in my opinion. Plus that's a lot of work for chickens and they still have those yucky black specs on them. Store bought chickens don't have yucky black specs and hairs on them. Rotisserie chickens, yum!

@ Rock, where's the tenderloin, where's top and bottom sirloin, where's the brisket and flank? Why are you trying to confuse me? I can't tell all of the cuts once it's mixed like that and not behind glass!
