Two Afghan refugees charged with child sex, spousal abuse crimes at Fort McCoy

MADISON - Two Afghan refugees are being held in a Dane County jail, accused of attempting to sexually assault children and physically abusing a woman in separate incidents while living at Fort McCoy in Tomah.

The two men appeared in federal court Thursday. They are part of the nearly 13,000 refugees evacuated by the Biden Administration from Afghanistan as U.S. forces withdrew, ending a 20-year war that began just after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Mahommad Haroon Imaad, 32, is accused of striking and choking his wife, who told officers she had endured similar abuse from her husband while living in Afghanistan — at one point losing vision in both eyes after being beaten, she alleged. Imaad pleaded not guilty Thursday. A soldier interviewed the woman on Sept. 9 after she fainted and received medical care at the base's clinic. She told the soldier she had been hit, strangled, raped and verbally abused by Imaad since arriving at the military base.

Bahrullah Noori, 20, is charged with three counts of attempting to engage in sexual acts with a minor, and while using force in one case. The victims were under the age of 16, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Noori pleaded "mute" on Thursday, which means Noori refused to plead guilty or not guilty.
