The city of Key West protects the chickens — you can't just grab one and make it into your Sunday dinner — but it did hire an official Chicken Catcher in 2004 in an attempt to reduce the population without killing any birds.

The chickens found in Key West are descendants of the jungle fowl that was originally found throughout the Caribbean, including Cuba. Early settlers in Key West had a normal relationship with their chickens, keeping them in coups and using them for food.

So they're protected.  I wouldn't be surprised if one or two end up on someone's dinner plate, really   Also, I imagine fresh eggs....laying around.

They look similar to Asian fighting chickens.

If you want to save a little bit of money, fuel up first before you go into the Keys and the farther you go in, the more expensive gas is. The gas in Homestead and Miami were at least a dollar less per gallon compared to the ones in Key West:
