Title: any hmong woman up for traveling the world (2015)
Post by: svang415 on April 30, 2014, 12:59:32 AM
Hi I'm a Hmong woman planning on taking an undefinite leave to do some traveling around the world next Spring 2015.

Months 1-2 will be US and Canada and months 3-4 Ecuador and somewhere in South America.  From there, I plan on moving to the eastern countries.

Has anybody done this?  Or is any Hmong woman planning on doing it soon also?

It would be nice to know if you've done this also or wish to pursue it as it would be cool to have a travel buddy even if its just for one part of the trip.

Either way, I'll be doing it solo but I just thought I'd look into it on the Hmong end also.

Hi!  Sounds like fun.  I would love to do this, one day!  A world tour, someday.

I know a couple Hmong women who've been all over for work but it's still an adventure!  Definitely have a travel partner. Please be safe and update us with pictures and stories!

It would be my ultimate dream to just travel the world. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to take that much time off and come back to a job. Bravo for you for doing this. You're also very brave traveling solo. Please do update and post pictures.

Thanks all, i appreciate the support.

Evil K, let me know where and when you'd like to travel to.  Yeah, I'd rather travel solo than with a dude as that might complicate things.

Sweet tears, without or without somebody, I'm going.

This is definitely something I'll be blogging about.  I've traveled by myself to foreign countries before but never long term like this.  I'm currently immersing myself with others who have done the same thing to eliminate any anxiety I might have.  I figure a job is always still gonna be there and I'm not getting any younger!  I've got Plan A, B, and C in place, so of course, if any emergencies like health with myself or my family come up then there would be a delay but for right now I'm on schedule.

But I'm not a creepy guy...lol, j/k I understand.

My plans aren't set in stone yet and I've been constantly revising them. I was suppose to be travelling this year, but things came up , which is why I delayed my plans to 2015.

If all goes well I'm hoping to start travels in March. My plan is to do six months in South America. Peru>Bolivia>Chile (not sure if I will do patagonia since it might be a bit too cold)>Argentina>Uraguay>Brazil and then England/France to meet up with my family for a late summer trip by Aug/Sept and from there maybe head out to India>one last relaxing trip in Bali or somewhere tropical...bef ore I head back to San Francisco.

gtk that there's some fellow hmongsters out there that share a similar sense of nomadicity.

...on another note, has anybody ever gotten rid of all of their materialist possessions?

i'm preparing myself to do this but its such a big pill to swallow.  everyday i look at my junk and i know I'm going to miss it soon  :'(!  either way, i have until, and i'm waiting until late September to put this into play, but i was just wondering if anybody has done this.

Hey brother,
Glad you're going out into the world and doing something you like.  Enjoy yourself! Have fun.  Same with you Evil_K.

From my years of experience, I have learned something very valuable and this is just me.  Material objects have no real meanings to me.  For a long time, I was a hoarder in the sense that I held on to things that I didn't need and memories that were tainted.  You could say I was a conservative, but long story short.  I outgrew that and realized when you're able to give away your most prized possessions then that is when you have become a man with the hearts of Gandhdi, Muhammad, Jesus, Mother Teresa and all of those who have values in human beings than object.

I gave away many things that were pricey, but it doesn't hurt if the person needs it more than I do.  I take pride in helping others and material objects only means so much when you're into it, but like all things, it will only get in the way after a while. I too want to take such a journey and take a leap of faith into the unknown.  Find some work in other countries and live here and there from time to time.   ;)

Hmmm...I'll think about it, if I visit MN again I want to time it where I don't have to deal with the humid summers nor the cold winters.

There is nothing more rewarding and life fulfilling than traveling the world immersing yourself in different cultures.  Though I've never traveled alone.  It has always been with a group and with people I know.

Good luck and safe travel!

yeah, in this day in age it's so hard to get everybody together even for lunch, let alone, traveling.  for the past 4 years I've been trying to nail down big trips with some friends and most of them have been unsuccessful.  i got tired of waiting..i figure there will never be a perfect time..i have to do it before I'm confined to a walker or something, lol!

Sounds like you'll have a good trip  :)

I've lived all over and traveled the world pretty extensively.  I find it much more enjoyable if I have a home when I travel.  I also tend to base myself in one location 3-6 months.

For example, I got myself a nice flat in London.  Then I would venture out to different parts of Western Europe but always had my flat in London to return to.  When London was done, I moved on to Rome, etc.  I like to get a taste of the locals and how people really live.  I don't know if money is an issue with you, but you can also get a job while you're living there and that is always a plus.

wow, I admire you and kinda jealous of you. I wish I live a life that I'm free to travel the world like this. unfortunately, I have too much bills to take care of. if I stop working, where am I going to live? what am I going to eat and what will pay my bills? all these prevent me from traveling.

you must have some $$$ saved up already huh, in order to travel for that long without working na. that's usually the case with most people anyways. for me, I don't have a dime saved up so it'll be super hard too. I wish I am financially stable in life already because I would be more than happy to be your traveling partner. sigh...I can always dream. if you don't mind, can you tell me how you're able to make this decision? did you have to save a lot? what about your bills? etc.

Hi Pucca, thank you for the 2 cents. I like the 2-3 month idea thing.  It sounds like you do some traveling for work, no?..or at least your work is flexible when it comes to traveling ?  ...or did you adapt to whatever work was available in each country?

My plan is to plan as far out as 3 to 6 mos with no obligation to work during the first couple of months.  Ideally it would be nice to furnish my whole trip for a year, but yeah, eventually, I'll have to make a living somewhere to sustain myself while I'm abroad.

Currently I have other priorities ahead of this but come the end of September I do plan on fully focusing on this and if you're around maybe I'll hit you up for some more 2 cents if you don't mind.  LMK ;D

Hey Autumbreeze, if somebody asked me that 15 years ago, I'd be like no way can I do it either.  I don't have much saved up but I figure if I don't do this I'll never forgive myself.  There will never be a perfect time.  I've flown by the seat of my pants before and things have worked out for me always in a positive way so the way I look at it, it really doesn't hurt to try.  As for bills, when I was younger it was piled high but now I've minimalized my life a bit so those bills are manageable to where by the time I leave it'll be taken care of.  I would say start preparing now if you plan on doing something.   My credit card miles will pay for at least two intercontinent flights and a couple domestic flights so I'll be saving money that way. Also, I plan on spending more more time in countries where I can get by with $500 or so a month.  I figure if I fail, I can always come back home and get back in the rat race, but hey at least I gave it a shot.  O0

I don't travel too often for work these days.  I have 1 overseas client and a few on the west coast.  But the majority of clients come in to see me.

When I was traveling/working, I accepted positions in other countries that I was offered through mutual acquaintances.  Basically, friends of friends offered to hire me.  I got a flavor of how the field (I'm in law) worked in that particular country and the rest of the time was mine to explore my surroundings.  When I was in graduate school, I got this advice from my dean: To never turn down opportunities when you're starting out, especially opportunities you'll never get again.  I took this advice to heart.

Feel free to contact me if you think I can help.   :)

Not many people are willing to take the challenge for opportunity that come up especially when it through connection.  I always believed knowing and having good connection get you in the door to discover more and move up the ladder.  You might not get another chance if you turn down the 1sr time and only very few are lucky to aimed at it again the 2nd time around.  Look at our local first Hmong judge here.  1st time he wasn't sure about taking on the role but lucky to get another chance at it again.  I guess most people are afraid to take on challenge/opportunity when they have a family vs. being single.

When my husband talk about China here and there.  I tell him let just moved over there for a few years because I'm sure you can find job in your field or even just teach.

Unfortunately such a long trip would burn my pockets and I'd come home and have to eat grass for a year or two  :'(

Please do update us. Have you thought about which cities and/or countries you want to visit? What about arranging housing or a place to sleep?

Many thanks!  Its a jump that I haven't regretted.  (though every once in a while i do miss having a routine and all the finer materialistic things in life)

I actually made a (girl) friend off this site but none for traveling so far.

As a solo traveler I use many platforms to reach out to other travelers and learn travel info..so this is just another one of those platforms.

I wouldn't mind meeting up with other fellow Hmong peeps but its not the end of the world if I don't.

My record of my travels are on FB where I keep all my bazillion pictures.  (I'll PM you the info).

I've thought about keeping a blog but I haven't been able to start one up yet.

For those that want to live your life as full as possible, don't "wish", JUST DO IT!!! O0 O0 O0

Thank you all for the support!!

Some folks in general SMH at me and of course some Hmong folks really SMH at me, lol!!

Running into other travelers and having folks back at home support my idea is what keeps me going.

When I first started I was scared sh*tless but on my connecting flight from Hong Kong to Dubai (when I first started my trip) I guess you can say I met an angel.

I didn't know anybody and I didn't know what was waiting for me in Dubai. All I had was a hotel booked for 1 week.  I even wondered if i would fly back home asap, lol!

Anyways, the angel was my seat mate.  She was this bubbly little Filipina sitting in the middle seat and had the biggest smile on her face.  As I started to sit down she asked the flight attendant to switch seats as she was in the middle seat and wanted an aisle seat.  While the flight attendant walked around to look for an aisle seat, we started chatting it up.  Moments later the flight attendant returned and told her that there was an aisle seat available.  My new bubbly friend replied "Nevermind, its okay I just made a new friend".  From that moment on I knew everything would be okay.

Its moments like these that keep me going and of course we are still friends to this day.  I have gone back to visit her again and she's invited me over again for the summer to stay with her but I politely declined as it will be a scorcher there!  Anyways..just thought I'd share this moment with you guys. :)

Awesome, thanks for sharing and continue to keep us updated as you journey on when you can... O0

I hear you, there are still some of those "Hmong folks" that really SMH at the idea of women traveling alone but I do see more and more are opening their minds and progressing and moving forward by recognizing the fact that women are also humans so they should have the same rights to live their life as they see fit for them...It's a fact that women can be just as capable as men when given the opportunity as history has proven it...
