Just wondering if anyone read this book yet? :D :D  I was watching Good Morning America and they gave good "reviews."

I wasn't impressed by the first few chapters.  I don't know if I want to finish reading the book.

Soft porn in writing. Isn't that what Harlequin Romance novels are for or is this slightly raunchier?

Heard good reviews as well. Heard it's the hot topic in Hollywood right now. I'm waiting to pick up my copy as well.

Uninspired, florid prose legitimized as "good" via public endorsement on morning talk shows that cater to a dominantly white, middle class group of women... ugh. When people say it's Twilight for adults, they are not kidding. The quality of writing is a bit below Meyer's... which isn't that high anyway.

If anyone wants real and well written bdsm, they should read the Beauty trilogy by Anne Rice (written under a pen name Roquelere or something like that).

Perhaps I needed a break from reality but I spent a whole day of my vacation devouring all three books... I need me a Christian Grey! :)

I was just thinking that I was gonna have to go out to buy it but I really didn't want to buy it either as that's not really my type of reading. Just wanted to read it to see what all the hype was about though.

I skimmed over the first few chapters of this book, and it kind of made me feel uneasy. :-\  I normally don't read stuff like this, so I guess I'm not used to it. ;D  Am still gonna read it though.

On the other hand, my hubby read the first four or so chapters, and I think he's secretly interested. :2funny:

Kimchi:  Thanks..let me check it out and share my thoughts later..

Updates:

Ok, so I was disappointed because I was expecting something great since there's so much fuzz/buzz about it.  I read a few chapters and I gave up... Yes, there's alot of STEAM in this book but I need more than STEAM to get me going hehhe....

Hi - I'm currently reading it. Was waiting at the airport and very bored so I decided to pick it up to see what the hype was all about.

Slow start but it seems to be picking up.  It's a bit disturbing. .... like why is it that she isn't scared of him when he showed her his playroom.. she's a virgin! But then again maybe she's desperate or very curious.

I hardly have time to read, but hopefully I'll get to finish this book by the end of June and start on the next one!

My SIL n her lady coworkers are all so crazy over Christian Grey! She gave me the books to read and it's not all that. His style is too kinky for me, I've read better ones. I'd say it's so so.

EL James said that she based the characters on Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, but amped them up. Obvioulsy the looks described in the book match to a tee, but knowing how goofy Pattinson is I don't see him playing the sophisticated Christian Grey. And then Stewart is such a lesbian and spaz that there's no way she could ever be Ana Steele, who is supposedly uber smart. Anna Kendricks is a better fit and maybe Chace Crawford as Grey.

My reaction to this book is..... WOW... do people really do that? Submissives and Dominants? WHAO!  Anastasia Steele is ANNOYING like Kristen Stewart playing Bella...

In the Epilogue where it was from Christian Grey's perspective, I thought that was very interesting to get into the mind of Christian!  E.L. James should have done it from Christian's point of view.

I listened to the audio book and it was funny hearing the reader's voice.  I think she orgasmed a few times throughout reading the book. LOL

Overall, book was okay.  I was hoping for a more dramatic ending. =P

Ana was annoying and did not come off as smart or interesting.

The first thing I thought when I began reading this book was that it reminded me a lot of Twilight.  And then when I saw the author on 20/20 saying she was inspired by the Twilight series, it all made sense to me.  I didn't like Twilight nor did I finish it either.  I only began reading 50 to take a break from Atlas Shrugged.  I guess it's time to go back.

what did you do in your past life that you would torture yourself in this life with such cruel and inhumane punishment?  :'(

I don't know, but I just felt the urge to read it. It was uncontrollable .... and so painful. :'( :-X

the writing is really bad and how anyone think this book can change/save their relationship needs to be in a straight jacket.

Um, I don't know how this book can change or help anyone's relationship. lol It's a total fantasy after all. I love the whole series. It's a creative aspect of writing. Loosen up about the fact that it's such bad writing.  :D

I'm excited to see who will play Christian Grey. He is in his own league that they shouldn't even make a movie! I looked up that Audi car and man... drools.

There are a lot of hype over this series. And people who don't normally read romance novels are reading it and recommending it to others. It started as an online fan fiction inspired by Twilight so obviously there are a lot of resemblances. I picked up a copy for my trip to Hawaii next week but haven't read it. Hopefully it isn't all so bad.

i like reading books with substance.  the sex and trashy nature of this book is fine with me, but what gets me is that it actively promotes women to stay with controlling and abusive men.  this leads to battered and even dead women...includ ing children.

I'm back and did not touch the book while on vacation. I did complete a mystery novel by Harlan Coben on the flight back and was looking for another book to read when my sister-in-law bought me "50 shades of Grey" at the airport bookstore! So now I own TWO of this book! Ugh. LOL. I tried to read it and the writing really does suck. I couldn't continue and have left it sitting by my toilet. Maybe I'll pick it up. :)

It does get a bit better if you can tolerate Ana. LOL... I finished the series last night.

Your sis is having Christian Grey fever.  :D

That's hopeful then! Everyone is recommending the book left to right! So I might have to re-pick it up.

I'm not surprised she's a fan! She loved Twilight and actually went out and bought Stephenie Meyer's non-Twilight book, The Host or something. LOL. Crazy girl!

i went out and bought the first book to anne rices sleeping beauty....im halfway and im disgusted with the book. im not feeling the whole slave thing...and the way their "slaves" are treated is just...theres no word to explain it. idk...but im hesitant to finish the book but since ive already wasted money on it i might as well finish it.
fifty shades of grey does not compare to sleeping beauty at all. to me, sleeping beauty is 100x more disgustingly disturbing.

This series is not even that great.  Hollywood is just trying to capitalize by following in the Twilight Saga's success because it was inspired by Edward and Bella.  This story started in the fanfic world called "Master of the Universe".  For those that don't know, fanfic is just regular ppl making up stories using characters from books, movies, etc... and most of these are full of lemons.  I like reading fanfics, but I didn't think this story was that good.  Three books and there was almost no plot or character development.  Just a lot of lemons.  There are better Twilight fanfics out there for reading enjoyment.

For those who are looking for big words and character development, this series is not for you. Personally, I could use a break every now and then from too much brain stimulation so I don't mind watered down prose but this was kind of boring for me. Ana Steele is a bit annoying and I don't see Grey's intrigue with her at all - not even if it's just for a little sexual entertainment. Honestly, if you just want to know what the hype is then skip to all the scenes where the sex happens. Everything else is just James excuse to get  this published.
