Title: Humpback whales probably do this for fun.
Post by: Reporter on May 13, 2021, 03:23:51 PM
They need to get onto the surface to breathe. But they don't just stick their nose out; they jump and fall back onto the water. The jumps aren't necessary to exhale and inhale. In fact, they may even hold their breath while doing that. So, it must be for fun only.

Nothing like watching it in person. Saw a couple of them breach the water when I on a Alaskan Cruise and folks were really looking forward to the tail part so they can take a snap shot of it.

Watching the flukes slowly dive into the water is cool. I love those videos.

Whenever Orca aka killer whales are not around, they need to do this "breathing air" thing couple times and very quick then they submerge and turn off their sonar.

Even though Orcas are both vicious to their own sea mammal species and generous to humans, I kinda dislike Orcas. One thing I don't tolerate the most is when they kill and bully their own kind especially the offsprings when they're just few months old.
