Nah....DNA plays a role.  Some of us are born with abilities.  Look at the pictures below.  How many number 2s do you see?  How long does it take you to find them all?

Some people can find them in an instant, because their minds naturally see that same picture like this Click Here You can train yourself to find the 2s faster, but you're still lagging behind someone who has the ability and will mentally gas out if competing.  This is just one example call synesthesia.

6 2s?  ???

So OP is asking Nature vs Nurture? Regardless what you are and become the DNA will always be there.

FRAK! This thread is old!  :(

Wedding Rituals & Customs / Re: Those who are against "bride price"
« on: October 01, 2013, 04:51:52 PM »
True that several countries practice it. Some parents even pay the groom vs. the other way, to take in their daughter. According to some experts, Hmong actually adopted this practice from the Chinese so it's wasn't a Hmong thing to begin with. The funny part is Chinese for the most part have moved forward and dropped that primitive practice while many Hmong still practice it.

If I have a daughter, I would not ask or even mention it because that primitive practice doesn't make sense in this day and age anymore. I would rather the young couple or the groom's parents use that money for the wedding celebration or invest in the young couple's future.

Personally, I don't believe that in face value.  :2funny: However, you know theking there is always that third traditional option of Hmong wedding. Where the future bride and groom stays at two family in certain amount of days and then consider as marry. As for payment it's either a yes or no. What Hmong OG doesn't like is paying the expense for the bride of groom using their stuff. But usually they should able to overlook that if the family has a steady income. :2funny:

If there is one thing I learn from Genghis Khan is that tolerance of other views and religious belief helped his empire to expand. Just saying.

Edit: Darn it! Gracified23! This thread is old!  >:(

Many times the kow towing isn't to show respect but to show submission to the bride's relatives and groom's relatives who are helping him get married. It becomes a torture when the in-laws require more and more whiskey or more and more kow towing on expanded relatives. Mine was a terrible one, which is partly why I've never been able to get over it. My best man and I were ordered to pe all of her relatives from all of the world, including not just those in the states but also those in Laos, Thailand, France, and China, too. They didn't even appear at the wedding. I'm afraid to marry a Hmong girl again. But maybe a Christian girl might be ok.
There was a tiny group of Hmong in Laos that often did that to their sons-in-law-to-be. Each time their daughters married someone, they'd require so much whiskey to be poured onto the sons-in-law that later such SILs would never be able to live a good life again. The idea was both to torture and to prevent life competition from the daughter's new family.

Is the reason cause the favor ZIJ POM NIAM?  Bride knapping. :2funny: Okay joking aside. If the son-in laws were smart or fortunate, their parent should tell you him to avoid pitfall traps. When is it too many to drink. Many family will try to make/trick you drink a lot in terms of their gratitude. Each shot is for each gratitude. Another pit fall is they make you recite or guess a riddle. To counter the gratitude, you have to basically have to give more gratitude to them. On the riddle this is something you have to learn from yourself. But fortunately, nowadays many Hmong don't know these riddles or proverb so yeah.

Hmong Culture & History / Re: Hmong Green vs. Hmong White

As stated in the translation: There were no documentary or written records of how became of Hmong Leng/Green and Hmong White. All I can say is go to Hmong New Year and look at Hmong  dress to determine whether they are Hmong White or Green.

This site can help to determine the clothes, but that's only it.

If you are Hmong green how do you really feel about Hmong white. Please explain one true situation that you encounter with Hmong white that you dislike or disagree with

If you are Hmong white how do you really feel about Hmong green. Please explain one true situation that you encounter with Hmong white that you dislike or disagree with

This is quite a touchy subject. But I will take a bite. First, I am Hmong Leng/Green. From my experience Hmong White tends to have both more diplomatic and political power than Hmong Green. They are also tend to be more verbal as well. Although both case aren't true.

Despite Hmong Green was the majority at one point. I haven't any negative experience yet with the Hmong White. However, here is my pet peeve: What I don't really like is that I sometimes have to right the current Hmong RPA that, at one point was written for the Hmong White only, just so Hmong White can understand.

Could you write in english. I know how to read hmong, but I prefer it english.

-Rough English translation-

There are no Mong Green. Only Blue Mong if elders have dress that has pieces mixed with color of indigo and green. But cloth such as sash, that are around the waist, has color of Green. That maybe why some elder says Mong Green.

Hmong White has White dress. The dress don't have piece color mixed such as indigo. That maybe why Hmong elders called them Hmong White.

Because there weren't any written documentary there are no proof to the truth of Hmong White and Mong Green. That is why Hmong White says this and Mong Green says that.

Way before Vang Pao's time, Mong Green lives with Mong Green village. Hmong White lives Hmong White village. They both avoid contact of one another. Nowadays, after the Indochina War, they both are more lenient about Hmong White marrying to Mong Green.

-There you go. If there is something that is incorrect pleased fixed my translation-

That's a typical attribute that many White Hmongs tend to have. Ignorance.

Btw, what is the reason or the way how you were taught that turned Hmong Leng into Hmong Green?
Don't tell me it's because of what we wear. lol

Personally I think the background of Hmong Green correlated with cannibalism is garbage. I personally think....

A)It was to stir so Hmong Dlawb or Mong Leeg can't marry together.
B)Someone(prefer if an outsider) bribe with hefty sum to the Hmong person to spread the lie.

I'd prefer option B. Hypothetically speaking, if Hmong were one of the first to irrigate, why suddenly changed to cannibalism in the last 200-400 years or so?

I've heard many of the elders say that, "All Hmong people were Green at one time"? Anyone got any other input on this?

Kuv yog Moob Leeg. Hmong Green or Leng, same difference. Anyway we were consider as Hmong Leng not because of veins, but we admitted to rebel against the Ming and Qing Dynasty. That is where Leng cames from. Leeg in Mong means to admit.

Hmong White or Dlawb on the other hand are the innocent one. The reason they are consider innocent, is because in order to escape from the persecution of the Hans or Manchu they change their clothes and accent. The one who started was a Hmong Women. If I recall in Hmong Dlawb Funeral the Hmong Women as sister or aunts are highly regarded. However, I never attended a Hmong Dlawb funeral before.

But anyway take what I said with a grain of salt.
