Title: Sweet Rice
Post by: ProudLao on March 16, 2021, 08:53:39 PM
Do you have favorite brands? Do you prefer short or long grain?

I have tried quite a few brands but don’t have any favorite.

Any brands grown in MN?

I'm an eater, not a cooker.

Wish I can help but maybe that is why I'm gonna marry me someone who will be my chef for life.  She cooks, I clean, something like that.

I haven't tried all kind of sweet rice and I don't have favoritism either. lol
There's a time I've tried the original sweet rice that my next door neighbor made who're pure Laotian. They always eat sweet rice whenever I came over their house and play video game with the only child of theirs. That's the time I first knew about sweet rice compare to normal rice.

I've also tried the brand ("Sho-Shiku") Cali Guy likes as well as this brand and they're good too IMO...And as you can see I'm a fan of the short grain version..:

We’re the opposite, I have never heard of steam rice until we live in Thailand camp. Always been sweet rice for majority of Lao people.

Which one is better?

Hard to say as they're all good as far as brands go but I'll probably stick to Apple if it comes down to it.

As far as short grain vs long grain goes..just depends on the individual but I like short grain better in terms of taste..

With that said, long grain may be a little more healthier so by "better", you're referring to health, long grain may be the way to go.. ???

I'm not referring to that question. I'm referring to the Minnesota-grown-rice question.

I don't know.  As far back as I could remember, we have always stuck with Apple.  So, I guess you could say that it's our favorite.

Sorry, don't know how to re-size but this brand of sticky rice w/ the purple sticky rice ==> perfect combination.

If you live in MN, you can go here to get the sticky rice:

Oh yes, I cook in the rice cooker like how I cook normal rice.... so ready in 15 mins.

I've tried the "rice cooker" method for convivence purposes but just doesn't taste as good so I went back to the old steam banana leaves method.. O0:

Dok_Champa, those sound like they would taste good.  Btw, I love the smell and taste of mov nplej tshiab.  So nostalgic.  I love anything that reminds me of my childhood.  Like zaub iab kib (stir fried bitter leaves), zaub iab hau tsuag nrog green bean, bitter eggplant pepper, bitter melon and chicken soup, etc.
