Title: Gaming Revival
Post by: bulbasaur on March 19, 2014, 09:40:17 PM
As a kid, I loved gaming.  Unfortunately, the funding for my hobby was limited.  So, as a kid, I promised to get all those games when I became older.  Years go by, and gaming fell out of my routine.  Other things took priority.  The last system I had was a SNES (actually had a PS2, but that doesn't really count).

One day, I was walking through the mall and saw the new systems and new games. I was actually looking for a blu-ray player, so I got a PS3.  Remembering my childhood promise, I also got some games.  I eventually got other systems with other games.  I even built a gaming rig.  You would think that this is cool.  However, now that I could afford to fund my hobby, I no longer had the time for it.  A big gaming library of unopened games.  At least it is impressive to look at.  Life is funny like that.

Anyways, after years of not gaming, I decided to attempt to do a gaming revival.  I am by no means a gaming expert, but I decided to start from the beginning, starting from the retro and hopefully ending up with the newest releases.  I don't know how long it is going to take, but we'll see.  Here is a list of the games I finished in the last year....

1.  Street Fighter HD Remix
2.  Chrono Trigger
3.  Breath of Fire 1
4.  Breath of Fire 2
5.  Earthbound
6.  Final Fantasy 4
7.  Final Fantasy 6
8.  Tales of Phantasia
9.  Dragon Quest 6
10. Dragon Quest 4
11.  Shin Megami Tensei
12. Pokemon Pearl
13.  Tales of the Abyss

I'm not counting mobile games or games that I didn't finish.  I'm not counting party games that were only played a few times with friends.

We are quite different.  I don't think that 17th century scholars believed the Earth was flat.   I believe the law should treat everyone equally, gays included.  I don't believe that insulting the opposition makes my point more valid.  I don't believe that credentials is good enough to prove a fact.  The list can go on.  :2funny:

All kidding aside, all the games are different and good in their own way.  If I had to rank one, it would be Chrono Trigger.  It was the first one I played, and it started my RPG run.  Other people would probably choose another game, but the first one is often the most magical.

LOL@B.  OMFG...I did something similar to.   ;D ;D ;D  I suppose we are not too different.

best RPG on your list?  :-\

Seiken Densetsu 3 should be on there as well.  It's one of the first games I ever played that had alternate-intertwining story lines as well as having options for characters and classes.

Get yourself an emulator and get all the neogeo Roms.  That's what I did.

Actually, I started Chrono Cross, but I didn't finish it.  Also, my list isn't rankings list.  It's simply the order in which I played the games.  FF6 is better than BoF1 and BoF2.

You need to put Chrono Cross on that list and bump it up a few spots.

A lot of fighters out there.  I was big into them as a kid.  As a result, I still buy them for fun.  However, I am not good at them.  They are more of a side thing now.  The games don't seem as fun since I am not trying to get competitive at it.  That's probably the reason why I like the NetherRealm games more now. They give a good story.

Json, I do have an emu for them.  You'd have to be a rich and stupid sadist to purchase a neo geo system.  I haven't loaded it up in years though, wondering if there are any new emulators for it (using neorage).

Yeah, I used to spend most of my video gaming either with fighter games (SF3, kid, virtua fighter) and racing Sims but I only really play moba, racing and turn based games due to time (advanced wars, disgaea, xcom).

Working my way up the Final Fantasy chain, but taking a break from FF.  Doing some Shin Megami Tensei.  That'll waste some time for a while.

You should have added these to your list of resolutions too...

1.  To learn that insulting others doesn't make a point correct.
2.  To get the correct information before making conclusions.
3.  To learn that credentials do not make a person's point valid.
4.  To try to stay on the topic.
5.  To stop hating on people who are different.
6.  To stop stalking people.
7.  Don't over-level Aeris because she's going die.   :2funny:

I quit gaming...  :'( :'( :'( :'(  That was my new year resolution...t o quit RPG gaming...LOL.. .it's too addictive...

Thanks for the suggestion.  I'll put them on the list.  I'm doing Pokemon Y now, but I am a little tired of sequels.  Maybe I'll do Disgaea after.

I'm trying to stomach Pokémon as well.  Grinding is more of a chore than other games I've played.  Worse part is I always have to keep trucking back to the damned Pokemon center.  My daughter loves it but I'm really itching for something else.  Grinding for levels and gear in Disgaea is more fun than the story, gets pretty hard but pretty rewarding if you enjoy dungeon crawling for gear and levels.

Is it just me, or is Pokemon Y a bit too easy?  My pokemon are leveling up pretty fast in comparison to the game.  On this one puzzle, I was messing with the controls, and then all of a sudden the game tells me how to solve it.  Maybe I am not far enough into the game.

It's Fire Red.  I dunno just playing the ROM on my phone.  There were so many I was getting confused.  A friend told me to play this one although I had already started a game on Ruby.  Not much different if you ask me.  Fight, level, try to find a crappy Pokemon only to level that, Pokemon center to heal, battle people, repeat.

Check out Bravely Default.  All rpg games need to implement this system of turning down or off frequencies of battle for grinders.  Hell, they should all implement the dual job system as well.

It's more complex than Risk.  It's sorta' like Risk, Monopoly, Life, Connect 4, Battleship, etc all rolled into one.  I just like extremely long turn based games because I don't always have the time to zerg rush a base in real time.  Unlike the other Civs this one actually teaches you how to play.  I've probably clocked in over 20 hours this weekend.  Great game with different modes (historically accurate, downloadable mods, multiplayer, expansion packs galore, etc).  A crap load of micromanaging economy, trade, religion, arts, culture, military, etc.  I'm waiting to get a little better so a buddy and I can loot and plunder Asian style.

In the middle of Bravely Default...

It's a polished version of many JRPG's.  If you've never played a JRPG, then Bravely Default can pretty much sum it up.  The story line and game play are taken from so many other games.  Yet, it is refreshing to see all these aspects in one game.  Bravely Default answers questions like, "Wouldn't Final Fantasy be so cool  if it had the Dragon Quest game play?"

CIV 5.  The Chinese and Mongols are OP.  I like how there are more ways to skin a cat than total domination.  Pretty fun but I've been playing Shadows of Mordor on the PS4.

Finished Bravely Default.  Saved the world again...actual ly, worlds this time.

*Spoilers*

With all games I play, I play them without guides.  However, after I beat the game, I do look up the game up to see if I missed anything important.  As it turns out, I totally missed out on an important part of the narrative.  The game talks to the player at certain points in the game.  I thought it was weird, but I didn't think much of it.  In the final boss battle, the boss made a few allusions that the real world and the game world were linked, and he was going to take over the real world from the game world.  At one point in the battle, the 3DS camera turns on and actually shows you in the game world and what he is talking about.  Unfortunately for me, I was playing the game in the dark.  I didn't even notice.  I think it would have been a really cool reveal to see me in the game.  Also, it would have made Tiz dying more emotional.  I'll have to go back and battle the final boss again, but since I already know what happens, it won't be as exciting.

Hmm, what should I play next?

Secret ending?  I am not sure.

*Spoilers*

I think I got the true ending.  I broke one of the crystals in Chapter 6.  Then, I replayed it again to finish 7, 8, and Bravely Default.  Fought Ouroboros.  Tiz died.  And there was seemingly a trailer for Bravely Second, where I was in some healing chamber.  I suppose that could have been Tiz in the healing chamber and I was seeing it from his point of view.  Is there another ending I missed?

Did you get the secret ending for Bravely Default?

It might be best if you don't get into it.  The story line is pretty much neglected since all the grinding you're going to be doing.  This is one of those games where you also NEED to grind to get better gear otherwise you have little to no chance of killing the higher ranked monsters.  However it can get extremely fun.  Start out with a hammer; it'll teach you the valuable lessons of dodging, holding a charged weapon, and a monster's weak spots.  Next move on to great swords where timing is essential.

I've lost so many hours I will never get back.

I decided to quit Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and to play Ni No Kuni.  I should give my PS3 a workout anyways.  So far, it's a mix of Earthbound and Pokemon.  It has some funky parallel worlds plot.  It's a really good looking game.  I've been playing portables, so these graphics are extraordinary in comparison.

I've owned my PS3 for years, but Ni No Kuni is the first game I am going to play on it (other than fighting games, but they don't really count).  Talk about a gaming revival.  I should do a 360 game afterwards.  I don't even remember the last time I booted up the 360.

Ni No Kuni is pretty fun.  Shorter than I expected but my daughter loves it; plays like a movie.  Don't get too attached to your starting monsters; they're pretty weak late game.

I could never get into Monster Hunter series.  Reminded me of Phantasy Star Online.  Same map, same monsters, same grind.  Bored me to death.

I just finished Shadow of Mordor and Last of Us on PS4.  Playing LOU again but platinum SoM.  Shadows is a lot of fun.

In this one town in Ni No Kuni, there is a big moving octopus on top of a food stand, and there is a big moving crab on another one.  It looks really similar to a section in Osaka.  I wonder if this is a coincidence, or if Osaka is the inspiration for this town.

Out of boredom, I picked up some new games.

Final Fantasy X/X2 HD Remaster.
Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker

I have more games than I need, but I really liked those series.  I should play a Zelda game to see why people love it so much.  I may not start from the NES Zelda; I'll probably start with A Link to the Past and work my way up, similar to what I am doing with Final Fantasy.  I am still on Ni No Kuni.  I am still trying to get familiar with the Familiar system.

Yes, I loved the game.  I went with the traditional tanker, dps, healing team.  I used the cat with the fencing sword all the way until the end game as my dps.  It's fast and deals a decent amount of damage.  The tin man makes for a great tank and has a skill to grab the attention of other monsters.  It can also wear some of the highest defense armors.  I constantly switched out my healer so I didn't have a main one.  The main character of the game is good for doing magic attack so I stuck with him for magic attacks.

Later on I eventually grabbed three of those really strong dinosaurs.  You see them walking on the plateaus on the desert but don't have access to them until much later in the game.

I personally enjoyed Bravely Default a little bit more (but I am not finished with Ni No Kuni).  I think it has a better story.  However, if you prefer a more action style battle system, you might like Ni No Kuni more.  And yes, Ni No Kuni really reminds me of Pokemon.  I even use Pokemon terms in my head despite that the game has its own nomenclature.

Obviously the PS3 has better graphics, but I like portable gaming.  I can bring the 3DS on planes and trains, or just leave it in the office and play here or there.  People surf their phones, but I pop open the 3DS.  With the PS3, I really have to dedicate time to actually play it.  Different strokes for different folks.

would you guys recommend ni no kuni (ps3) or bravely default (3ds)?

I might consider buying a new game to play if gw2 expansion doesn't come out before school starts.

I tried the demo of bravely default. I loved it.  I just didn't have time to play it then with school and work.
ni no kuni from the videos i saw looks like a pokemon x tales.. combat reminds me of tales of symphonia, which i loved!
And the capture monsters them is always my favorite..

Ni No kuni is listed as 20 bucks at gamestop and Bravely Default like almost all other nintendo exclusives is 40 bucks still.
Title: Re: Gaming Revival
Post by: minorcharacter on May 15, 2015, 08:05:24 AM
I thought the battle system to Ni No Kuni was a bit too simple.  They could have made a more advanced version for players to hotlink a combo or skill to R2+Triangle or something similar.  The battles were supposed to be active so having to go into menus to select a skill detracted from that feeling.

The game play from Bravely Default is in a different class of it's own, and overall I enjoyed Bravely Default more.  It takes the class system to a whole new level by adding abilities from sub classes allowing you to mix and match skills.  I haven't had this much fun with preparing skills for battle use since the materia system from FF7 and the one from FF9.

Both games have great music.  The final boss battle theme music from Bravely Default is in the same league as Kefka's Dancing Mad and Sephiroth's One Winged Angel. These guys also did the theme from Attack on Titan.

The 3DS has limited resources so there's not much that can be done about the graphics.  It's great if you think about it in that sense.  Don't wait too long.  The sequel to Bravely Default, Bravely Second, is set to release soon!

I'm not  sure which game to  play next.  I finally finished my first home console game with Ni No Kuni.  Final Fantasy 10 would be nice since I am trying to catch up with the series.  Eternal Sonata would give the 360 a workout.  I never played a game on that system.  New Mario Bros Wii and Donkey Kong Country Wii look fun.  It's been a while since I played one, but my Wii isn't even hooked up.  South Park: Stick of Truth seems like a quirky RPG.  I got the new Devil Survivor and Persona game, but I kinda want to save those for any vacation or long trip I might take later.  Or maybe I should go away from RPG's and start Uncharted, God of War, Metal Gear, or Tomb Raider.  I can see what I missed from the PS1 and PS2 generation in HD.

No fighting games for me.  They are just a side thing for me these days.  They aren't as fun since I don't want to be competitive.  The story modes in these games aren't even interesting.

Of those games, I only have Xenoblade for the Wii.  I don't feel like hooking up the Wii right now.  The Wii was made in the HD era, it should have shipped with HDMI.  Nothing in my setup even runs on that yellow cable anymore.  Wii games are going to have to wait until I redo my setup.  Is the Wii U backwards compatible with Wii games?  I have a Wii U, but it's still in the box.

What about Xenoblade, Pandora's tower or The last story?

I'm waiting for xenoblade chronicles to come out. :)

I am not digging the sphere grid in FFX.  It is essentially another menu.  Why do I have to go into another menu to "activate levels?"  It's almost a linear path.  There is no reason to skip an ability.  This isn't quite a jobs system.  Maybe I am not far enough in the game yet.

Also playing Devil Survivor 2....

It's a fun game.  I enjoy the series.  However, WTH didn't Atlus use the nicer bigger screen for the game play?  I have to squint my eyes to use the smaller cheaper screen.  The top screen is barely being used.  The entire point of having an XL is to have the bigger screen and nicer graphics.  It doesn't make sense.

OMG, I finally did Jecht's shot.  I got so frustrated that I even looked it up to see if it was even possible.  Everyone said to use the analog stick.  I gave up on that and used the D-pad.  I should have trusted my reflexes and the precision of the D-pad to begin with.

Finished Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2...saved the world again, kinda.

I don't think I got the true ending this time though.

I haven't started my next game yet.  I've been a bit busy.  I was going to DL Disgaea and Persona 3 from the Playstation Store, but I was too slow to get them on sale.  They were about $7, but now they are $20.  I think I want to wait for them to go on sale again.  I could get the PS2 version for my PS3, but I think I would prefer them on my Vita.

I got Persona Q on the shelf, but I think I want to to play Persona 3 first.

I'm not into video games like when I was younger. Over the years picked up new hobbies. The last systems I bought was the PS3 and Wii. Except for my old time favorites like Street Fighter, NBA Live at the time, NBA 2K etc I don't really play much anymore. I tried when i got those systems, like a kid with a new toy had to play. But when youre out and about all the time and come back to a Zelda game or Assasin's Creed after a few weeks you forget the mission you're on and what you've accomplished already lol. The FPS games annoyed me with how many games kept coming out. Nowadays I just casually play when the chance arises but want to get back into the Street Fighter scene since my skills are lagging and my friends always like having a video game fight night and the last one I sucked lol. And of course with Street Fighter 5 coming I need to get back into it. It'll probably be like how I was when SF4 came out. Not into it at first but once you get a feel for the game gotta keep up lol.

For me, I like fighting games, but I am not into them as I once was.  Fighting games are unlike other games because part of the fun is the competition.  Simpy beating the game is not as fun as competing against real people.  These days, I don't want to dedicate the time to them anymore.  I am not even good at the old fighting games that I used to be good at.  I know what I need to do, but my execution no longer exists.

That being said, I still buy the games and goof around on them, and maybe go through the story a  bit.  It is all nostalgia and nothing more.

Yea that's how I am in Street Fighter. I just play off what I use to do. I don't sit and play games anymore to practice.

I was going to do some Disgaea, but I missed it when it was on sale.  I am going to wait on that again.  Instead, I am going to do some Persona 3.  That way, I can play Persona Q whenever.  I suppose I could play Persona Q without playing Persona 3, but I think some background would make the game more interesting.

I missed the sale too.  Been too busy playing Civ V BNW.  Nobunaga is out today, got good reviews.

Persona 3 is surprisingly similar to Persona 4.  Persona 4 is more polished though, and that makes sense.  I am still enjoying the game though.

Alrighty, so I finally opened the Wii U box after 3 years (or was it 2?) and set it up.  Now I just need to pop in a game.

I have 2 wii's and unfortunately also my biggest purchase regret of the last decade.  Great console; just left a terrible taste in my mouth and I haven't wanted to give Nintendo anymore of my money.  My wife and daughter still love pumping money into the DS or Pokemon but me I've given up.

Since my PS4 is family shared I decided to load up all the older console emu's and used my PS3 controller to play old school Sega Master System, NES, SNES, Genesis, etc, on my laptop.  My buddy and I are tempted to try a Phantasy Star series run but I don't remember anything from it.

Why describe the Wii as great and then regret?  Personally, if I can get some kind of entertainment from a console, then it's worth it.  Then again, if you were one of those people who paid $900 for a Wii during its initial short supply, then yeah, that's regretful.

I was upset because they just dropped support and the peripherals always broke or went missing.  It didn't stop me from continuing to purchase everything but again the Wii just sort of went off the map.

All this Wii talk makes me want to play some Wii games.  I really only like playing this one shooting game.  In fact, I like motion controls for rail shooters.  I know rail shooters aren't popular anymore, but I have fond memories of playing rail shooters in arcades, such as House of the Dead, Area 51, Virtual Cop, Time Crisis, etc.  In any case, these rail shooters were a break from the fighting games in the arcade.  Now, if I could only find a way to fit an air hockey table into my house......
