Title: Hmong American Sportsmen Club NEWS & UPDATES
Post by: addisonlee on April 18, 2011, 09:50:14 AM
Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to give you an updated on HASC's projects and plans for the rest of 2011. We’re gonna need all the help we can get with some big projects for the Hmong community.

-   Releasing 3,000+ trout for a kid’s free fishing weekend (showing kids how to fish, help untangling lines, cooking, setup, etc.)

-   Taking care of 3,000+ pheasants (feed, water, etc.) to be released on public hunting land and habitat restoration of public land (to hold a wild population)

-   Learn to hunt events for the Hmong youth (squirrel, pheasant and deer) (need mentors to teach the youth)

-   Volunteer efforts with the local community to change the Hmong stereo-type (community clean up, habitat restoration, river restoration, etc.)

These are just a few of the many projects we have going on for the year. Let me know if you or anyone would be interested. Feel free to contact anyone of us.

Thanks,

Addison Lee
HASC President

I don't believe that our efforts are just trying to appease the white hunters, but rather to show them that we, too, are hunters and conservationis ts just like they are.  Without looking at color or race, we're all out there for the same purpose:  to hunt, to carry on the tradition, and to preserve the outdoors for generations to come.  If we don't do this now, there might not be an outdoors for our kids or grandkids to hunt with.  At a hunting heritage conference held this past February, the DNR has outlined the fact that hunting is on the decline, and we need more hunters more than ever now.  Everyone is affected by it, not just us.  And while the Hmongs represent a relatively small portion of that hunting group, we can all still make a big difference if we work together with everyone.

And while some of our efforts do deal with other clubs, we are still our own club and do things to benefit ourselves and everyone around us.  With limited funding and facilities, we work closely with other more established clubs to help us get us off our feet and on our own.  We also have the extra hurdle of first working past the stereotypes and breaking down the cultural barriers between us and the white hunters, which is also another reason why we work so closely with the DNR and other clubs to gain familiarity in the community.  It takes several small steps to get going, and we've only just begun.  If you're interested, we invite everyone to attend some of our meetings to voice your opinions and comments.  We welcome anyone regardless of race or color.

Networking big at Hunting Heritage Conference
Second annual event delivers optimism about future, cultural insights

ROTHSCHILD, Wis. – While attendees of this year’s Hunting Heritage Conference learned how to organize a local educational outing, others say the most valuable benefit of the two-day session was meeting others dedicated to recruiting hunters of all ages and ethnicities.

“My sense is that others at the conference found it helpful, and like me, enjoyed meeting others fighting the same fight,” Jim Shurts of Madison said. “The primary highlight was the opportunity to meet with others who are active with hunter recruitment and share common goals.”

Shurts, chair of the John M. Keener Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society, was among the roughly 110 who gathered here for the second annual conference for Learn to Hunt organizers.

Sponsored by the state Department of Natural Resources, the heritage conference began in 2010 as a combination brainstorming and information-sharing event for hunting mentors, organizations and volunteer instructors interested in solidifying Wisconsin’s hunting future.

Mike Skaife of Prairie du Chien, whose local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation hosted the state’s first Learn to Hunt event 13 years ago, especially enjoyed his conversations with Sheboygan-based Hmong American Sportsmen Club members.

“We talked with them a lot, about their background and it was very interesting to hear their stories,” Skaife said. The Hmong initially were unaware of Wisconsin property laws which caused unintentional frictions, and prompted the creation of outreach and education programs to rectify the situation – including the DNR’s Harmony in the Woods.

Hmong club president Addison Lee agreed these conference conversations are valuable and enjoyable, and suggested “a more diverse selection of guest speakers to consider the wide array of perspectives of hunters throughout Wisconsin” for future hunting conferences.

DNR Hunting and Shooting Sport Coordinator Keith Warnke says Wisconsin, like other states, has lost active hunters which affects conservation activities that benefit everyone. DNR records show gun-deer hunting licenses sold to Wisconsin residents declined 6.5 percent between 2000 and 2010. The decrease occurred even though 10- and 11-year-old hunters were added for the first time in 2009.

“This means there is less funding for conservation efforts, and less conservation being practiced,” Warnke said. “Fewer hunters participating in legal hunting means fewer resources for, and less focus on, conservation. Everything from game management to wetland restoration will be impacted.”

The DNR started the Learn to Hunt Program in 1998 to provide youth and adults opportunities to experience an actual hunt with an experienced hunter. The program involves classroom and field instruction in addition to the hunt. Warnke says the program in 2010 saw a 10 percent increase in participation. “This increase was, in large part, due to last year’s first Hunting Heritage Conference,” Warnke said. “We expect this conference to have a similar impact.”

The Learn to Hunt program has reached more than 3,000 novice participants in the last two years through the cooperation and funding of the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s Hunting Heritage Partnership Grant Program and the Wisconsin DNR. The foundation’s grant program has funded the Wisconsin conference both years.

Lil Pipping of Elkhart Lake, past president of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, says the first great hunt provided by Learn to Hunt programs needs to be followed by another to keep the interest going. Rich Kirchmeyer, secretary-treasurer of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress, agreed and suggested borrowing from other children’s programs. “If we could adopt-a-kid not only to take them turkey hunting, but also grouse and more…so they get the full experience of all the outdoors has to offer,” he said.

Warnke says the conference attendees were united on one goal. “They clearly understand their role in recruiting the next generation of hunters in Wisconsin.”

On Saturday, May 7th several members of the Hmong American Sportsmen Club showed up to help clean-up Maywood Park and improve its habitat. It started off with a chilly morning with the sun shining down on us as we started off planting over 100 cedar swamp trees in the lower river valley of the park, then also pulled and trimmed weeds and unwanted brush from the public walking paths of the park. The event ended with a lunch full of hamburgers, hotdogs, and much more.

More pictures to come. Enjoy.

+1 Thanks for the positive comments.  O0

I believe we should all lead by example and that is what HASC is all about. If we don't make an effort now to take care of mother nature, our children will be the one's being deprived from the memories we enjoyed so much as kids. We're always looking for extra help with our activities, if you or anyone else would like to join us feel free to contact me. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted on our conservation efforts.

Good job guys! Good to see a lot of our young ladies are getting into hunting too! I guess I know where to go when I start looking to settle down eh? Haha all joking aside, it's great that you guys are getting out there to better inform both sides. Like stated, it starts with small steps, every little bit of kindness goes to breaking stereotypes and racism. When we were hunting in MN we were carting out my uncle's buck and my doe, half way back we saw a white hunter that had a huge doe (bigger than my uncle's 6 point) who was obviously tired. After asking if he needed help, we tossed his doe on top of our deer and walked back together. In the end we are all facing the same issues together, division among hunters makes us weaker for the animal rights activists to take apart.

Members of the Hmong American Sportsmen Club (HASC) gathered to volunteer and support the Sheboygan County Conservation Association (SCCA) with the Annual Kid's Free Fishing Weekend. As some 500+ anglers attended the event to give their luck a try at catching one of the 2,000+ rainbow trout and hybrid bluegills, HASC and SCCA members were busy setting up tents and cooking cook. Many of the tents included activites such as, BB gun safety shooting, archery shooting, face painting, fish cleaning stations, fish cooking stations and free prize drawings for the youth. HASC is a proud member of the SCCA.

The Hmong American Sportsmen Club held the first Learn To Hunt Squirrel skills training event in the state of Wiscosnin. It's a huge milestone and first step for HASC to keep the squirrel hunting tradition strong and alive in the Hmong culture. WI-DNR wardens and biologist came to speak about squirrel habitat, reproduction, foods and conservation of these animals. The LTH Squirrel event is schedule for Saturday, September 10th with 12 students and 12 mentors on public hunting grounds.

After the skills training class all the students got to meet their mentors and were very excited to go on their first squirrel hunt. The smiles and reactions we got from the students were priceless. HASC looks forward to doing more LTH events in the near future. If you would like to help and know anyone who would like to participate in next years event or any of our club events, feel free to contact me.

More photos to come soon. Enjoy.

Shaping a diverse hunting heritage

...

Passing the baton

Sheboygan hunter education instructors Cher Pao Vang and Sam Vang formed the Hmong American Sportsmen Club (HASC) last summer. Members include several generations of family and friends who absolutely love to hunt. HASC joined the Department of Natural Resources for a Learn to Hunt pheasant program last fall, and HASC member Addison Lee recently joined the Sheboygan County Conservation Association's board of directors as its newest member.

"It's really great to see diverse people and organizations working together towards the shared goal of passing on Wisconsin's conservation ethic and outdoor culture to future generations. We're really excited about it because in the end the conservation efforts of tomorrow depend on the youth of today," said Randy Stark, Chief Conservation Warden for the Department of Natural Resources.

Nowhere is the passing of the baton more evident than with the Milwaukee fishing clinics sponsored each summer by E.B. Garner. Garner, long-time Milwaukee resident and retired county worker, has taken kids to local lakes for over a decade to teach them how to fish. Parents, guardians and friends often accompany the youngsters, so that fishing traditions get passed to entire communities.

"Two things in life you'll never forget," Garner is known for saying, "the first person who took you driving...and the first person who took you fishing." Hundreds of kids in Milwaukee can now point to Garner as the first person who took them fishing.

Fishing clinics have also caught on in Madison. Susan Corrado, community parish and wellness center nurse, has worked with Allied Drive neighborhood residents and DNR fisheries and warden staffs for two years to teach casting techniques, review size and bag limits, and discuss ways to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.

During fall in south central Wisconsin, dove hunting has become the big draw. "Many folks who are familiar with dove hunting in Mexico are now finding that they can enjoy dove hunting here as well," says DNR Warden Gary Eddy. Eddy said in all his time of checking licenses he's never come across so many Spanish-speaking hunting groups as he has in the Edgerton and Evansville areas during dove season.

And thanks to DNR Warden Gervis Myles, hundreds of Milwaukee school youth have now grabbed a hold of archery. Myles earned his instructor certification in the National Archery in the Schools Program in 2006. Since then he has introduced over 700 Milwaukee students to the sport. He also has helped 32 other individuals earn their archery instructor credentials. For all his efforts, Myles was honored by the Wisconsin Bowhunters Association as Warden of the Year 2011.

Kou Xiong, the DNR's Hmong liaison stationed in Eau Claire since the early 1990s (currently on medical leave), organized and taught hunter education courses for the Hmong community all over Wisconsin. Xiong and many of the hunter education course participants are veterans of the Vietnam War. They fought alongside Americans in the jungles against the North Vietnamese and Laotian communists. Before the war, many were avid hunters. They now enjoy reconnecting with their hunting passion here in Wisconsin.

In fact, two new Hmong sportsclubs have sprung up in the last four years: the Hmong American Sportsmen Club of Sheboygan in August 2010; and the Hmong Conservation Club of Green Bay, which opened its doors in 2008.

Hmong American Sportsmen Club hosts first WI-DNR Learn-To-Hunt Squirrel Program
September 10th, 2011

Sheboygan, WI – The Hmong American Sportsmen Club (HASC) launched just over a year ago with many goals and missions, knowing it was going to be a long, rough road ahead. A dozen members consisting of generations of family and friends who have a passion for the outdoors started the club. Last fall HASC teamed up with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for a Learn to Hunt pheasant program, which turnout out to be such a success HASC decided to make the Learn to Hunt program an annual event; with this year’s first Learn to Hunt squirrel program in the state of Wisconsin.

“Squirrel hunting is the single most popular game animal in the Hmong community, even bigger than deer hunting. Our purpose of this learn to hunt is not only to keep the tradition alive with the next generation of Hmong hunters, but to educate these young hunters with all the sights and sounds the forest has to offer,” said Addison Lee, Club President of the Hmong American Sportsmen Club.

Many of the mentors and students headed out in the darkness of the forest hoping to harvest a squirrel or two. As the morning was filled with many sightings of squirrels, only a handful of students had the opportunity to harvest squirrels. Meeting back at the Hmong Mutual Assistants Association building in Sheboygan, WI; mentors and students gathered to share their stories of the morning hunt while eating lunch.

A total of five squirrels were harvested by the students, as well as a lifetime of memories with their first squirrel.

Hmong American Sportsmen Club hosts Small Game Sight-in before opener
Giving back to the community

September 11th, 2011

Sheboygan, WI – The Hmong American Sportsmen Club (HASC) hosted their first annual free Small Game Sight-in this past Sunday for the surrounding Hmong community before the big opening day of small game this coming Saturday. HASC teamed up with the Sheboygan Rifle and Pistol Club (SRPC) and their range officers to make the event possible, which brought out over 30 Hmong small game hunters to come sight-in their small caliber rifles.

“By offering this free sight-in to the Hmong community we’ve offered these small game hunters an opportunity to test out their rifles in a safe and controlled environment; giving them the confidence to go out and harvest a few squirrels knowing their rifles are accurate. In previous year, these hunters had no other choice but to go to the woods to do their sight-in. It’s great to know we can give back to the Hmong community for which our club represents,” said Addison Lee, Club President of the Hmong American Sportsmen Club.

As one of the range officers of SRPC Reed Van Ness was at the sight-in to help out and give his expert advice.

“It’s a great thing the Hmong American Sportsmen Club is doing here for the Hmong community. Our club looks forward to working with them again in the near future,” said Reed Van Ness, President of the Sheboygan Rifle & Pistol Club.

Hi everyone.

I just wanted to give you all an update on how the booth went at the Sheboygan Hmong New Year this past holiday weekend at Sheboygan North H.S. I met and talked to many sportsmen/women, along with future outdoorsmen/women with an interest in what we do. The event was very popular and had much to offer from traditional Hmong ball tossing, dances, singing, to the arrival of the Prince of Laos. All in all, the HASC booth was a success, in that we got the message across letting the Hmong community know we are here for them.

Happy Hmong New Year  O0

Local outdoors: Hmong American Sportsmen Club to host fundraiser at Odyssey Fun Center

The Hmong American Sportsmen Club (HASC) brat fry fundraiser will take place on Saturday, Feb. 25 beginning at noon at Odyssey Fun Center in Sheboygan Falls.

As a proud member of the Sheboygan County Conservation Association (SCCA), this club's top priority has been educating members of the surrounding Hmong community on all current and new outdoor changes within the county and state.

All the proceeds of the fundraiser will go towards the HASC mission statement, which includes activities such as the hunter safety classes, learn-to-hunt events, free fishing weekends, local gun sight-ins, habitat restoration and much more.

The club's family oriented fundraiser will be selling bowling tickets for $10 each at the event, which will include three games with shoes and the opportunity to get a colored head pin for a chance to win prizes.

For more information contact Addison Lee, HASC president, at 920-254-2430 or at [email protected].
