http://jalopnik.com/volkswagen-admits-it-cheated-with-11-million-engines-s-1732283322
Cliff notes:
VAG (VW, Audi, Skoda,SEAT) is in deep water over the deliberate fraud of their popular tdi engines (false claims due to software magic).  It was just slated as a possible US fiasco but has turned into a worldwide issue.  Over the last weekend their stock plummeted 20% and was also repriced by the DAX (German stock index).  Shortly thereafter they announced that there are approximately 11million (at first only 500,00) vehicles with the shady software that maps differently for EPA and inspection agencies.

Sure this isn't directly killing people but reports claim that up to 40% of the NoX levels were present; thus their claim of greener options is pretty null and void.  I'm wondering if this is the nail in the coffin for diesel here in the US.  There are discussions of the government agencies getting involved; including the IRS and criminal charges pending.  Overall, not looking good for VW.  If you have money you may want to look into purchasing some stock if it dips low (still over $100 but wait for the hearings).

Had a Rabbit in my younger days and never again. I'm sure the new VW are built better but they lost my business a long time ago. This cheating case doesn't help them any.

Well wait for the smoke to clear a bit and then buy one right after the stop sale is lifted.  The only way you wont be able to haggle price is if the demand is great but if they're sitting on the lot...  BAM!  Instant savings but you still own a VW...

It will be interesting to see how this pans out and what effect this causes for diesels here.

That just shows you the quality and pride that they put into their customers. Glad their going down. Their CEO just resigned today, admitting to all the cover ups.

Many different car companies have gone through many of these same-like scenarios.

Ford, Chevy, and Dodge suffered a lot when they overestimated their own ability to pay back their workers through their unions.

Toyota and Honda the past 10 years have been involved in some of the most expensive lawsuits when it came to car companies.

Hyundai and Kia nearly killed itself by not being able to match the quality and the standards of other car makers.

What happened? They call came back and did better then expected just years later. It may take time but it'll happen.

The thing is if you want to buy a vehicle that has been wrung out then you get the model after these recalls.  These batch usually are scrutinized to hell and usually are over engineered because of the shade thrown at them.

I'm honestly interested in other members' views about the effect it may have on diesel vs. gasoline.

Not sure how much you will make.  You may get a free car wash or a small check in the mail once it has been sorted out.  You definitely can and probably will save money on buying a used (not sure how stop orders are for used cars) but are faced with a vehicle that will be much less priced when it comes to selling or trading in.

More interesting news.  The up coming VW Phaeton will be a hybrid.  From a W12 to a hybrid...  In a Phaeton of all things.  Does that not stomp on the backs of your loyal customers then Im not sure what will.  I guess we know who won this battle...

I've always wondered how in the heck did VW's be passing emissions when you see huge puffs of smoke out of their tail pipes. And now we know. And it's about time.  The truth comes out eventually. O0

There are talks that even some 2015 models may still have the code embedded in their system.  VW quartly earnings dropped $3.74billion since this fiasco.  Expect that number to rise.

Via Jalopnik
The agencies reported violations have been found on the engines of the 2014 Volkswagen Touareg, the 2015 Porsche Cayenne, and the 2016 Audis A6 Quattro, A7 Quattro, A8, A8L, and Q5. Those vehicles had “emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx) up to nine times EPA’s standard.”

This violation covers about 10,000 cars in the U.S. alone.

VW has been fined $14.7 billion with federal regulators.  They have also planned a buy back of affected diesels in the US (the rest of the world is SOL) due to the inability to find a fix.  There is evidence of VW execs covering up evidence that they knew of the  cheat.  Dealerships have been left high and dry with tdi's they can't sell and are starting to lawyer up.  On top of it all US States are starting their civil cases against VW.  Lastly, VW has conceded that the diesel market will be replaced with electric hybrids.

This scandal just keeps giving.
