Irish dig deep to support virus-hit native Americans, repaying 150-year-old debt

Already more than $1.3 million has been raised with donations flooding in from Ireland. The generosity dates back to a gesture made in March 1847 when the Choctaw Tribe heard news of the Irish Potato Famine across the Atlantic. Now, 173 years later, the gesture has been repaid with donors from Ireland opening their wallets to help. “The Choctaw and Navajo First Nation people helped the Irish during the Great Famine, despite their own suffering,” ...“When I learned about it, I never forgot it; they know all people are the same in the end, and showed such decency and humanity. It’s history now, but we are still grateful. Thank you!”

My playland used to be like that.  I used to live in Barstow california, the city about 2 hours away from vegas, the city where it is known that them addicted losing gamblers are living at cuz it is closer to the game for them and too poor to live anywhere else.

I was 17 at the time cuz my dad was in the service.  I lived with him there for 6 months and had to wonder off in the high desert like I'm the coyote looking for my road runner.

I will never want to go to such places again.  If I need a place to stay for the night on a road trip then yeah but not a vacation destination cuz I honestly already experienced that lifestyle already.

With that, I have to pass.  The only good thing is the hunting games that I did played.  Early morning, you see a bunch of rabbit ears and that is what I shoot to kill to eat.  I was super healthy at the time. 3% body fat.  Running around the high desert with no shirt on and just shorts and had them tan like them fancy white boys.  IT was a fake life, white washed out life that I tried to lived.  Hated it and never more.

yep, that's the high desert I once lived and went to barstow high during the second half of my jr year.  I was doing fine with the 1st half of my jr here in Stockton cali but the moved by my dad forces me out of my comfort zone.

Saying good bye to friends were the hardest thing for me to bear.  Plus seeing my high school crush for the last time without telling her how much she made me wanted to wake up for class just to see her again.

That barstow city at the time had 1 of everything.  1 movie, 1 drive in that closed, one mcdees, one of everything pretty much.  We were living in a motel that turned into an apartment complex, basic and dirty like one of them drifter movie where killers and strays would stop by to spend the night.  My weights and bench were outside the front door and I would get this manager lady be walking in her tight tight shorts just to try to entices me to look at her.  I don't mind though.  She was young enough to look at.  Her ex husband on the other hand would come to me to get some juicy info about who she been seeing.  It was a weird way of growing up.  My only friend was cowboy joe who lives further away but we would meet up at another adult school for the drop outs and bad students and I would teaches him how to play basketball.  I would constantly walk along a 2 lane highway, walking in 100+ heat, once again, no shirt on with just shorts and would walk for miles like I'm a dirty redneck kid who parents are probably hippies and staying in some make shift trailer trash park.

The only thing that kept me azn was the weekend.  My dad would drive 2 hours to the OC where he would pick up azn inventories and we frequently crashes other people's wedding just to eat their free food and run.

Like I said, bad memories to how I was raised in the 6 months that I was there.  I still go through town on my way to vegas if driving just to see any changes if any.

I'm pretty sure you and your wife will enjoy it..You can hike or drive (no 4x4 needed) through the trails there and enjoy the breath taking scenic views...

If you're up for it, I think you can also do horseback riding tour through those trials too..  O0:

Book the cabins for the most beautiful view!

This hotel is aptly named - the views of Monument Valley cannot be beat! You feel like you are in the middle of Cowboy Country immediately. The hotel was completely booked so we booked a premium cabin and are so glad we did! Our cabin was essentially in the monument. It was by far the best location we have ever stayed. Cabins are small with a double bed and a bunk bed, but do the trick! We had a front row view to the sunrise - what an experience! The food at the hotel is not great, so fill up before you come or bring your own food and eat on your porch (you won't want to leave). They also project old westerns after dinner - a great touch where so many iconic movies were filmed. Would return here in a heartbeat!
