Whats a good starter rifle to shoot with? Something under $400.

Depends if you are a kid or a man.  If kid= .243, if man = 30-06, .270, .308, 7mm, 30-30.  Kids might not like the recoil from larger caliber rifle...

Make sure you can use a rifle in your area.  Most areas you can only use a shotgun and not a rifle because bullets from shotguns will not travel as far as a rifle.  You can get good shotguns for under $400.

Can't go wrong with a single shot rifle/shotgun that can switch barrels to a 22lr for that price.

Less recoil and has good knock down power i would start off with a .243, .270, .308, .30-06, 7.62mm SKS

Depending on the brand u want price will varies

If u are planing on hunting zone 300 it will be shotgun only
Or to make it easier any hunting ground south of us hwy 10 will only be shotgun and anything north will be high power rifles or shotgun.
