Wisconsin Teacher Charged With Sexually Assaulting Her Student After Husband Called Police
A Wisconsin Spanish teacher is facing up to 18 years behind bars for allegedly sexually assaulting one of her 17-year-old student.
Rebecca Kilps, 34, was arrested in May and charged with three counts of sexual assault of a student by school staff, according to a press release from the Two Rivers Police Department.
Kilps had a court appearance on Monday, during which she waived the time requirement for a preliminary hearing, according to WBAY. That hearing is scheduled for July 22, at which time the judge is expected to determine if there’s enough evidence for the case to go to trial.
Kilps’ bond condition, set in May, was amended at Monday’s court appearance so that she can now see her son, according to WBAY. Before the change, Kilps was not allowed contact with anyone under the age of 18, according to the station. Kilps also had to surrender her passport.
She is currently free on a $10,000 cash bond.
The investigation into Kilps began on May 23, when social worker reached out to a detective with the Two Rivers Police Department because a student had told her about a relationship between him and a teacher, according to WBAY.
The next day, Rebecca Kilps’ husband called that same detective and told him that, after becoming suspicious of an affair, he checked his wife’s cell phone while she was sleeping and allegedly discovered text messages between his wife and the underage student, WBAY reported.
He said the messages he saw revealed the two were “talking about a future together and saying they loved each other.”
