I don't believe that singles are truly single. They're substituting it with something else. For example, my coworker is single and doesn't plan to be in a relationship at all. But she is surrounded by brothers and her dad. My neighbor is single and doesn't even bother to date. It turns out that he is really close to my daughter's teacher, an older woman, who comes around to check in on him like an older sister. Basically, what I'm saying is that heterosexual people who prefer to stay single find a way to surround themselves with energy from the opposite sex. This energy doesn't have to be sexual or romantic. It's really about keeping a harmonious balance. As human beings we are made to interact with the opposite sex in order to have fulfillment. Those interactions do not have to be sexual or romantic. There are people who are content and happy with this kind of energy around them. They don't feel that it is necessary to be in a romantic relationship.
