A Marysville man wanted for a domestic violence incident crashed into five vehicles and allegedly attempted a carjacking on Lindhurst Avenue as he fled from deputies.
"It happened so fast," said Andre Eugene, an Olivehurst resident who was with his children in a vehicle when a speeding car approached without warning on Tuesday. "We were sitting at the light. He came from the opposite direction and hit the side of the car.
Tou Lee Her, 33, was arrested by Yuba County sheriff's deputies after a vehicle and foot pursuit. He was booked into Yuba County Jail on suspicion of attempted carjacking, evading law enforcement, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, resisting arrest, provide a false name to law enforcement and domestic violence. He also had an outstanding felony warrant and was on parole.
Her led sheriff's deputies on a pursuit that began at Seventh Avenue near Western Avenue. A tire was punctured on Her's vehicle after he drove through a spike strip and a deputy had to jump out of the way when Her swerved his vehicle toward the officer, according to a department statement.
The pursuit ended less than three minutes later due to the speeds and erratic driving by Her that presented a danger to the public, according to the Yuba County Sheriff's Department. They continued to track his movements, with the help of a California Highway Patrol helicopter, but patrol vehicles did not have their lights or sirens on.
Vehicles waiting to turn at the intersection of Lindhurst Avenue and Erle Road did not hear sirens or anticipate the speeding car that approached them, Eugene said.
The speeding vehicle struck five vehicles, including one head-on. Some people were injured, including a 10-year-old child, according to Undersheriff Jerry Read.
"It was a scary experience," Eugene said. "It was a hard time for a lot of families."
The suspect left his vehicle, got into the passenger seat of a stopped vehicle and told the driver of the car to take him out of the area, Read said. The driver was able to fend him off, and Her fled on foot.
Deputies were able to apprehend him shortly after.
