Long time ago, my wife and I were fishing off the pier in San Luis Obispo.  Caught a bucket of smelt.  Brought them all home, cut one opened and saw a bunch of parasites inside it.  We got grossed out and threw the whole buck away.  I haven't eaten smelt since.
