They're light on the fishy taste, you can eat the fine bones (fried correctly) and they were plentiful. You could scoop as much as you wanted, no limit.Free food basically.
I'm not sure why the appeal for smelt but I've never really cared for them.

The stream is so narrow and the smelts come right to the shallow. You don't have to get into the water. You just stand on the pebbles and scoop them out.
