People with a position or title are just at the basic, beginning level of leadership. That is not quite considered
leadership yet, says Maxwell.

Real leadership begins at the next level of influence: people obey you because they want to, not because they are forced to; they simply
permit you to lead them because you actually deserve it.

This requires a long-lasting development of the people who will let you lead, solid relationships that focus on the people's needs and desires and not on your ego.

People who can't build solid relationships hang onto the titles and are stuck there; people who can build solid relationships become effective, long-term leaders.

This is the permission step of the five steps of leadership.--John C. Maxwell, Leadership Educator.
