I've been there and some spots just cannot sustain fish life for very long due to lack of circulation and flow in the hot Summer months:

A race to save fish as Rio Grande dries

On a recent, scorching afternoon, off-road vehicles cruised up and down a stretch of dry riverbed where normally the Rio Grande flows. The drivers weren't thrill-seekers, but biologists hoping to save as many endangered fish as they could before the sun turned shrinking pools of water into dust.

Took these photo when I was there:

Beautiful site but my phobia wouldn't allow it.  I can imagine that rush of water just flows out of nowhere and without warning.  At the other end must be a dam that is holding back the water.  If it breaks, if they opens it, you gonna have to run for your lives.

Besides that, dino hunting in them layers of sediments.
