Are you talking about the AC unit of the HVAC system itself or just the other parts of the HVAC system?

HVAC comes in three parts: The AC unit consist of Condenser, compressor and fan that dissipate heat to the outside of the house (This is sometime refer to as ouside the home); the other unit include the evaporator, filter and blower that circulate cool air into the house; the third is the thermostat - regulate the air temp.(These are refer to as inside the home).

Install the HVAC system into the attic is done for labor cost mostly... and save space.

I have the AC unit outside my house and the other part in the basement.

the AC/furnace/hvac  is all in the attic and roof

really weird... for us midwest folks who don't travel much
i ask my relative what is that thing sticking on top of the roof
