Saw a vid where a rural man in China was being arranged to marry a girl, by his parents... she had multiple suitors coming to her house to get interviewed by her parents. The asking dowry price was 200,000 yuan - that's equivalent to ~$28,000 USD. Not only that, the family ask for more... during the negotiation they added another 45,000 yuan.
His family had to sell almost all of their possession just to get her... but once, they were married, she showed her true color - lazy and ungrateful. She sleeps til noon and won't eat anything the in-laws cooked for her claiming they were not good food (it was the best the family could afford). Well, she and the husband got into it and she ran back to her family... He was then forced by his mom to go back and get her. He reluctantly obeyed and had to go and apologized to his in-laws and bow and beg them. They wouldn't bulge until his mom comes crawling in and started punishing him (by hitting him with sticks)... I don't blame her family that much... I blame his family for stooping that low to get her.
