Text messages released in court reveal married suburban teacher’s alleged sexual assault of student

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — A teacher from a Chicago suburb has been accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old student.

Christina Formella, 30, was taken into custody Sunday. She is a special education teacher and soccer coach at Downers Grove South High School in Downers Grove.

An investigation began on Saturday after a boy, who was 15-years-old at the time, went to the police station with his mother to report alleged sexual contact committed by Formella. She was his soccer coach and tutor at the time, according to police.

Police believe in December, 2023, the boy and Formella were in a classroom for a tutoring session when the alleged sexual abuse began. The student was 15-years-old at the time and Formella was 28-year-old.
