US Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick of Florida indicted on charges of stealing $5M in disaster funds
Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-Fla., has been indicted on charges of stealing $5 million in FEMA disaster funds and using the money to support her 2021 congressional campaign. The indictment alleges that Cherfilus-McCormick and her brother, Edwin Cherfilus, received an overpayment from FEMA for a COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract and laundered the funds through multiple accounts to disguise their source. The congresswoman and her brother are also accused of using straw donors to funnel the funds to friends and relatives, who then contributed to her campaign as if they were using their own money. If convicted, Cherfilus-McCormick faces a maximum sentence of up to 53 years in prison.
