Jet Li Loves Buying in Bulk at Costco
The martial-arts star has used meditation and training with Buddhist monks to cope with injuries and illness

Jet Li didn’t pick the name that would join Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan in the ranks of global martial-arts movie stars. When he saw a poster for his first movie, 1982’s “The Shaolin Temple,” he discovered that producers had invented a stage moniker for him.

“They said ‘Jet’ is fast, like an engine,” Li says. “In the beginning, I was quite happy with that and felt I needed to keep up that engine energy. But later on I had to figure out who I was.”

Why do you love shopping at Costco so much?

I first went there in the ’90s. It’s cheap and you can buy things in bulk that you can use for two years. Toilet paper, instant coffee, toothpaste. In the Chinese zodiac I am a rabbit, and during your zodiac year you need to wear red for good luck, so I had my daughter buy 30 red cotton T-shirts from Costco. My wife and I have been wearing the same comfortable red T-shirts at home for five years.
