Missing Auburn student found dead in Japan, mother says
An Alabama student who went missing in Japan while traveling with his family has been found dead in a "mountainous area outside of Kyoto," his mother said.

An Alabama student who went missing in Japan while traveling with his family has been found dead, his mother said in a June 6 social media post. It had been over a week since he was last seen.

James "Weston" Higginbotham was found by a volunteer search-and-rescue team in a mountainous area outside Kyoto, Japan, his mother Nancy Higginbotham said.

"The grief we feel is impossible to put into words," she said. "We are forever grateful for the time we had with our sweet, precious Weston, but cannot begin to understand what life without him will be like."

The 20-year-old Auburn University student was last seen on May 29 while the family was on a trip to celebrate his younger brother's high school graduation, Nancy Higginbotham previously told USA TODAY. The family was supposed to leave Japan on June 4 but extended the trip since Weston Higginbotham went missing.

James "Weston" Higginbotham, 20, who went missing in Kyoto, Japan, on May 29, 2026.
A search effort was launched with local police sending helicopters and volunteer search teams across hilly terrain. Nancy Higginbotham previously said her son may have been emotionally distressed and was an "experienced hiker."

"We are deeply grateful to the countless people across the United States, Japan, and around the world who shared Weston’s story, prayed for our family, offered encouragement, and helped in the search efforts. The outpouring of kindness and support has carried us through the darkest days of our lives," she said.

American student James Gracey is found dead in Barcelona after a spring break night out. Here’s what we know
Those who last saw James “Jimmy” Gracey at a Barcelona nightclub may recall a young American man whose curls were backlit by the crimson glow of the dance floor, or the strobe lights glinting off the rhinestone cross he wore around his neck.

Gracey parted ways with friends while clubbing early Tuesday and was last seen alive around 3 a.m., relatives say.

In the days that followed, his family, friends and fraternity brothers at the University of Alabama anxiously awaited news. Gracey’s father flew to Barcelona, where city police patrolled the streets and scanned the nearby beach for signs of the 20-year-old.

But the search ended Thursday when Gracey was found dead in the shallow ocean water in front of the club, Barcelona police confirmed.

Investigators say initial signs point to an accidental death. Still, the cause and circumstances of the young man’s death are unclear.

19-Year-Old Colombian Woman Killed in Mexico City Just Two Days After Arriving for the World Cup
A Colombian woman and the man she traveled with were reportedly killed in an armed attack in central Mexico City, only two days after arriving in the country to watch the match of her national team in the World Cup, her family and local authorities report.

Alba Lucía Castañeda Torres flew from Bogotá to Mexico City to have a dream vacation. According to her father, José Isidro Castañeda, she was eager to watch a World Cup game between Colombia and another nation.

The vacation trip in question was organized by Iván Luque, a 45-year-old man with whom she had been communicating for two years.

Castañeda claimed that this man promised to finance her trip, provide financial support, and help launch a business in Mexico City. Despite his warnings, the father said he could not stop his daughter, and she went anyway.

On Monday, June 8, two days after their arrival, Castañeda Torres and Luque were traveling in a black car near Paseo de la Reforma in the Morelos district of Mexico City, close to Tepito.

According to the Secretariat of Citizen Security, the car was followed by some people on two motorcycles. At the intersection, the attackers opened fire on the car, making it crash into a pole. Both Castañeda Torres and Luque died in this incident, and their murderers managed to escape, according to the authorities.

The Mexico City Prosecutor's Office keeps the case secret. Local media reports, without an official confirmation, that Luque had an alias in Colombia and even a criminal record. Investigators are trying to find out whether this crime was actually a targeted assassination of Luque, with this young woman killed too, according to these sources.

Castañeda claims that he is appealing to foreign countries to help him bring back the body of his daughter. Due to being a poor man earning only 20 million Colombian pesos (which equals 100,000 Mexican pesos), he is unable to cover expenses for consular and funeral services, as well as transportation of the body.

"They took her from me, and she was the greatest thing in my life," he said. "I can't leave her there."

Body found in Costa Rica amid search for missing SCV woman
A woman’s body has been recovered in a Costa Rica river after an extensive search for a woman who went missing in the area and is originally from Santa Clarita, according to multiple media outlet reports.

Ashley Phillips, 30, of Santa Clarita, has been missing since June 3 and was living in Costa Rica at the time of the tragedy.

She was believed to have gone missing “in San Salvador de Barú, a rural mountain community in Pérez Zeledón, in the country’s southern zone,” said the Tico Times, an English-language news outlet in Costa Rica, in an article that was published on Monday.

According to Costa Rican Red Cross spokesman Ricardo Arias Mora, authorities believe that a flash flood, or a sudden surge of water passing through a river, may have been the cause of the incident, he said in Spanish during a brief phone call with The Signal on Thursday afternoon.

A dozen Costa Rican Red Cross members began a six-day search utilizing technological equipment to conduct dives to investigate the main pools of Rio Barucito, before the search was called off, Arias Mora said.

On Wednesday afternoon, authorities were notified through their emergency dispatch system that the body of a woman was seen trapped between some bushes near the river, less than half a mile away from the initial reported location of where Phillips went missing.

“We arrived, identified the body of a woman showing no signs of life, recovered the body, placed it in a safe area, and handed it over to the judicial investigation agency in Costa Rica,” Arias Mora said. He could not confirm the identity of the woman.

Woman takes solo trip to Cabo. Then a surgeon shows her pictures of organs on his phone. Then he bangs on her resort door
A woman is speaking out after a terrifying experience at an all-inclusive resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where a man followed her back to her hotel room and attempted to push his way inside.

The video, posted by vlogger Lydia (@usernamelydia), has resonated with thousands of solo female travelers who say her story is both a warning and a reminder.

"Yes I did my research to find a 'safe hotel,'" she wrote in her caption. "Yes he may have been 'drunk' — but that's no excuse. Yes, I couldn't sleep that night in fear he would come back."

Were there any warning signs?
Lydia had extended her stay in Cabo after a friend's wedding, booking an all-inclusive resort solo from Sunday through Wednesday to work remotely and decompress. Monday evening, she went to dinner at the resort.

I used to want to travel around the world. But after learning more and more
about mafias and terrible bathrooms outside the North American countries,
I've changed my mind.  France will be missed.

Of course, the migration to the U.S. has been full of international trips already.
