‘My friend and I were publicly shamed for being poor’: California student goes to coffee shop. Then he sees a video of his friend’s Honda out front

Two college students stopped at Community Goods in Los Angeles after class for a matcha latte. Nothing unusual. They got their drinks, got back in their Honda Accord, and went on with their day. The next morning, one of them woke up to find that they were being mocked on TikTok for driving a non-luxury car to a café full of them.

So he uploaded a video of his own, which has since gone viral.

"My friend drives us in her Honda Accord and, in front of the Community Goods store, we get our matcha and then we just, you know, go on about our day," said Jons (@archive.jons), a lifestyle creator and new college grad, in his response video, which he pinned to his profile under the title "poor shaming."

"The next morning after I wake up, I am scrolling on TikTok and I see that video," he says.

What did the other video say?
The original clip, posted by a creator outside the Community Goods location on Melrose Avenue, showed the Honda Accord parked among the luxury vehicles that typically line up outside the trendy café. The caption read, "someone didn't get the memo" — implying that the Honda was out of place in a parking lot dominated by high-end cars.

After Jons left a comment on the original video, it was deleted. Then he made his own video.

"Sorry, we're just college students who pay tuition and we have not had the opportunity for better economic mobility in comparison to the rest of LA," he said in the response video. "We just wanted to get a fun drink after class. Like, who knew a girl with a Honda couldn't drink a matcha latte?"
