How did Hmong pick white basses over mooneyes?

This fish looks as shiny and yummy as ever.

This is the fish that the Hmong used to love back in Laos. The moon eye resembles it  just as
much as the white bass does.

Bass that's white. It's also called sandbass because it picks up crawl fish and other water bugs
on sands.

you don’t usually target mooneye
it’s more of a by catch

the white bass is super common around here
if you find one, there usually a school nearby

plus they grow fast and out compete native fish

easy to catch and good chunk of meat...no tiny bones to choke on.

i would still eat them
but prefer not to
