...dates except for a couple of occasions where my dates insisted on splitting the bill...

Men Frustrated That Gen Z Women Expect Them to Pay for Dates
Figuring out who is responsible for getting the check on a first date can be difficult. Modern rules say the person who asked the other out on the date should be the one who pays, though tradition says the man is expected to pay. One Gen Z man, however, expressed his frustration on Reddit about this tradition and why other women his generation apparently expect him to take care of the bill. In response, many commenters gave him advice on what he should be doing instead.

Commenters give advice on who should pay on dates
One user on the r/GenZ Reddit asked why Gen Z woman supposedly expect him to pay for a first date. Assuming in good faith that the user is indeed a Gen Z man (and isn't just rage-baiting on the internet), he criticized "traditional gender roles" and was miffed that "whenever I date within my generation, the expectation is that I pay for everything for her like what???"

As you might expect, the user received plenty of responses. One of the most prominent pieces of advice they gave him is that he should make it clear from the start that he wants to go Dutch, even if it comes with the risk that he won't get the date in the first place. One wrote, "You can make it known you don't want to do traditional dating, but you'll weed out a lot of women."

Still, others are surprised that he couldn't find women to split the bill. A user responded, "What area are you in? For me in a blue state in the U.S., whenever I've gone on a date the woman's always assumed we'd split the check."

Another provided their perspective on the issue: "As a woman, I expect the person who asked the other one out to pay for the first date. Unfortunately, that's usually the man. I have asked men out and offered to pay, but they usually stop me."

A self-described millennial woman said she would "go Dutch when I can" but thought that seeing the guy pay is "a nice gesture" and shows that he is "willing to invest in her so to speak."

That said, one respondent said that this issue is not a Gen Z thing at all and that it is, in fact, quite the opposite: "In society, a gentleman would pay when inviting a lady for a date. If you want to split the cost, make it known upfront. Gen Z is more open to splitting costs than previous generations as Gen Z doesn't really seem to date in the traditional sense."

A separate user agreed that younger generations are more flexible on this front: "I've never paid full for a first date in my life lol, I feel like if anything Gen Z women are more open to splitting bills than previous gens."

Frankly, if I don't pay for my own foods, I can't
taste how good the foods are.

People who expect others to pay
for their meals lack character.
