Woman, 65, Charged with Murder After Allegedly Killing Her Husband with a Flagpole in Their Gated California Community

A California woman has been charged with murder after her husband was allegedly fatally injured with a flagpole in their Palm Desert condo.

Police responded to a report of "unknown trouble" in the 35000 block of Gateway Drive on Friday, Sept. 4, at 9:47 a.m. local time, according to a media release from the Riverside County Sheriff's Office (RCSO).

Upon arrival, deputies found a person "suffering from traumatic injuries consistent with a physical assault." The person — whose name has not been announced publicly pending next-of-kin notifications — was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies identified the suspect as Palm Desert resident Vicky Kim, per the release.

Kim, 65, was arrested that day, according to public Riverside County arrest records.

She was booked into the John Benoit Detention Center following her arrest on Saturday, Sept. 5, according to both the RCSO and public arrest records.

In a statement to PEOPLE, an RCSO spokesperson said an investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

The victim was Kim's husband, according to an SFGATE report.

Kim allegedly used a flagpole to inflict great bodily injury on her husband, per court documents obtained by the outlet.

In a statement to the media obtained by SFGATE and News Channel 3, Riverside County District Attorney's Office spokesperson Molly Smith said Kim had previously faced several domestic violence charges involving her husband.

"In January of this year, our office charged Ms. Kim with a felony, obtained criminal protective orders, and intended to aggressively prosecute her for her crimes against her husband," Smith said.

"Despite our office's clear objections, a judge resolved all of the defendant's cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody, and terminated all protective orders that prosecutors worked hard to obtain," she added.

The Riverside County District Attorney's Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Kim was scheduled to be arraigned on Friday, Sept. 11, but the hearing was continued after a judge said she had not been medically cleared to appear, according to News Channel 3. Her arraignment is now scheduled for Monday, Sept. 14.

It is unclear whether Kim has legal representation at this time.

According to News Channel 3, Kim and her husband lived at The Enclave, a gated condominium community in the area. The development describes itself as offering residents "luxury and style" on its official website.
