Stopped by Bend years ago when they still required gas station attendants to fuel up your car so White men not only pumped my gas but also cleaned my auto's windshield at no extra cost:

When we passed by Bend last week, we stopped by to check this one out

Violent crime will tick up just a bit due to this school shooting...But still a peaceful town overall...

Bend, Oregon has a low crime rate that sits significantly below both the Oregon state average and the national average

People moving to Bend from larger Oregon cities — Portland, Eugene, Salem — almost always say the same thing in the first month: the city feels smaller and calmer than they expected, and the crime conversation they braced for simply never comes up the way it did back home. That instinct matches the data. With a violent crime rate of 1.7 per 1,000 residents and a property crime rate of 14 per 1,000 residents, Bend sits meaningfully below both Oregon and national averages (Bureau of Justice Statistics, Crime Known to Law Enforcement, 2024).

I don't think they were peaceful or kind. They had to
attend to your gas pump because they didn't trust
outsiders or anyone else around them to pump their
gases.

Small towns do that because they have limited resources.

But when a 16-year-old is already doing a mass killing, that's
a very violent community.

It's not a "trust" issue, it's a law enacted in 1951 that completely prohibits drivers from fueling their own cars in the state of Oregon so only gas station attendants/employees are allowed to fuel up your car for you. However, after 70 plus years, that ban was lifted a couple of years ago so drivers can fuel up their own cars like other states now except NJ.

Bend, Oregon is still safer than most of the U.S. so it's not very violent and still more peaceful than most communities.

Hero bystander, teacher praised for saving lives in school shooting
The bystander who stepped in to stop a gunman at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has come forward and identified himself as Kaylub Giamanco, a lifelong Bend resident who has two daughters at the school. At a news conference Friday, police also praised a teacher who threw a cellphone at the gunman, tackled him and fought to take his weapon.

Police said Giamanco pursued and fatally shot the 16-year-old attacker, ending a rampage that took the lives of three children and a teacher and wounded two others.

A statement released by Giamanco's family on Friday said, "He is not seeking recognition, but instead wishes to express his gratitude to the first responders, school personnel, and community for the outpouring of love and support."

Teacher and armed parent teamed up to stop Oregon school shooter, police say
BEND, Oregon, Oct 16 (Reuters) - A 16-year-old boy who shot and killed a teacher and three children in an Oregon special-needs classroom was stopped by another teacher who tackled him and an armed father who fatally shot him, officials said on Friday.

Their actions on Thursday saved other lives, the local police chief ‌told a press conference.

A day into their investigation of the latest US school shooting, police released new details of the scene at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, ‌where three schoolchildren aged 5, 8 and 11 were killed along with 25-year-old teacher Meghan Lambert.

A 7-year-old was wounded and listed in serious but stable condition, and another teacher suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

TEACHER 'HELPED PREVENT MORE BLOODSHED,' POLICE SAY

The unidentified teacher who stopped the shooter on Thursday threw her phone at him, tackled and fought him. A 36-year-old father of two students then rushed in with a legal .40-caliber pistol and fired at the suspect multiple times, killing him just before police arrived.

This teacher, who was not injured, "almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed," Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz, at times choking back emotion, told a press conference.

"The teacher who was willing to stand and fight for her children, that's true heroism," he said, without identifying her.

Kenda Freeman told the New York Times that her son Kaylub Giamanco, whose two daughters attend the school, killed the shooter, according ‌to video posted by the New York Times of Freeman reading a brief statement.

NJ is the only state left:

Quote
New Jersey is the only U.S. state where it is illegal to pump your own gas. Under the 1949 Retail Gasoline Dispensing Safety Act, every gas station must use trained attendants to fuel vehicles
