Popular local Hmong filmmaker dies from COVID-19 complications
A popular figure in the local Hmong community has passed away from COVID-19 complications.
Su Thao of Fresno died from respiratory complications on Thursday, July 30th in Fresno.
Su Thau had a video production company, ST Universal Video, where he produced and voiced over Hmong films of Thai and Bollywood films.
He was also the first to go to Laos to produce documentaries about Hmong people there in the early 1980’s.
His videos of himself traveling and talking to Hmong people in Laos, China, Vietnam, and Burma introduced himself to Hmong people around the world with over 6,000 VHS/DVD distributed monthly to Hmong communities around America, France, Australia and Canada.
Su Thao was a Hmong radio host on KBIF 900AM and then an owner of KQEQ 1210AM Hmong radio.
He was a successful businessman and a very well-known personality in Fresno.
He is a former soldier for the CIA during the Secret War and immigrated first to Iowa then made his way to California.
Su Thao was the subject of an award-winning film about his family in "City of Refuge."
Funeral services for Su Thao will be held Sunday, August 23rd at Yost and Webb Funeral Home and he will be buried on August 24th.
Su Thao leaves behind 4 siblings, 9 children, 18 grandkids, and 17 great-grandchildren, but his legacy extends beyond his family. He will forever remain a dynamic part of the Hmong American immigrant story.

He Fought For The U.S. In Laos. Later His Documentaries Connected Hmong Communities Worldwide
