SAN FRANCISCO — A 23-year-old man died and nearly a dozen other people were hospitalized, some with life-threatening symptoms, after possibly ingesting tainted drugs at a weekend rave party just south of here, the police and local health authorities said Monday.
The man, Anthony Mata, was one of more than 15,000 people who had flocked on Saturday night to the rave — Pop 2010: The Dream — a popular annual event held at the Cow Palace, an arena in Daly City.
During the show, medical personnel called the police to report that several patrons were suffering from “suspected Ecstasy drug overdose.” They were taken by ambulance to local hospitals, said Lt. Jay C. Morena of the Daly City Police Department.
Rachael Kagan, a spokeswoman at San Francisco General Hospital, said three people were admitted early Sunday morning. One, Mr. Mata, died Sunday night; the other two remained hospitalized in critical and serious condition on Monday. KCBS-AM reported that some of those hospitalized had internal bleeding and kidney failure.
Ms. Kagan would not comment on the specifics of their conditions but said dehydration and fluctuations in body temperature were common in patients who have taken drugs and danced in “confined, hot environments.”
More than 70 people were arrested by undercover officers on drug charges, mostly for sales of Ecstasy. It was not the first time that the authorities had made arrests at events at the Cow Palace; in 2008, the police arrested 58 people for drug sales and possession and seized more than 1,000 tabs of Ecstasy.
On Monday, health authorities in San Francisco were warning people who attended the event to seek medical help if experiencing high fevers or drowsiness. A statement from the Daly City police said that the authorities suspected the drugs were tainted “with an unknown toxic substance,” and that toxicology tests were under way on drugs confiscated from the rave.
