It just depend... I've seen plenty of houses with fence and without fence in the Midwest.

Half the town I lived in have fences... and it's a Midwest State. It's all about preferences, man. I have a full fence in my backyard.

I've been to the midwest and houses do have wooden fences.  You don't get out much from the basement

I'm in the Midwest and I love the 6ft privacy fences. It's less about being neighborly and more about having some sense of privacy. We have them on one side of the yard and they're great. The other side with the 3ft fence has become an issue with the constant barking from the neighbors annoying little rat-like dogs that come running out whenever we leave the house. So, yeah, I love the 6ft fences.

Why do some regions like fences more than others?
In California, where I'm from, the only time I'd ever see an unfenced back yard is when someone lives way out in very rural parts of the state, where neighbors are either nonexistent or very far away. But in Iowa, where I visit occasionally, whole neighborhoods go completely fenceless and all the houses seem to just sit on one large continuous lawn.

Are people more willing to share in Iowa? Are Californians more shy?

Anybody have any insight here
