Man, it's hard to click with people with no common interests...
« on: February 04, 2022, 10:58:52 PM »
Wife thinks I am a hater because I refused to hang out with her bros and bro-in-laws. Tried it a few times and all they did was drank till they're drunk. It's like drinking is a hobby for them or something. Her bros and bro in laws most likely think I am a hater too since I almost never accept their invites to hang out.

anyone having this issue?

No issues here because I tell it like it is...when in situations like that.

You have the right to do what makes you happy regardless of others' opinions...

yeah, but about to hurt some people's feelings for sure. it's like.. "why the F do I wanna waste my time with you guys if all you do is drink and drink...". Can't do anything with them that doesn't include excessive drinking.  Like.. Can we just go to the bowling alley and bowl and not get drunk? losers

Let me tell you my experiences. About 16 years ago,  I tried frequenting those Hmong clubs. First time and first one was AC or Asian Cuisine in St. Paul. I was surprised to find many
old friends in the community whom I had not seen for many years. So, we rejoiced and celebrated with drinks.

At first, I drank a can of beer with them. As they wanted to add more, I told them I couldn't handle more but that I appreciated their generosity. (The elders love beer attention. It's a sign of respect to be given beer or some whiskey.)

My friends respected me so much that the following two meetings there, they offered white gourd juice and coconut juice to me only. I really appreciated that.

I stopped going to clubs not because of the drinking but because of one fight I saw right behind me. I was eating at a table with a girl. I heard some glass breaking behind me. I turned around and one guy was already down on the ground with his nape all bleeding. The guy who had hit him with a Corona glass bottle had just stepped into a crowd and the cops couldn't find him because "all Hmong looked alike to the White cops and no Hmong boy would snitch another Hmong boy."

I never went clubbing again.

"i'm too shy" works all the time for me. hahaha

No, don't make excuse or lie because when you lie, you become part of the problem...

yeah, but about to hurt some people's feelings for sure.

As long as you're honest and assertive with your position, that's all you can do. You can't control how others are going to receive your message so it's up to them if they want to be "hurt" by it or understand where you're coming from...

Better than just play along while feeling miserable...

Personally, I've even refused drinks and/or food at Hmong weddings due to health, hygienic and sanitation concerns..And when they asked, I was upfront about it..no sharing glass or double dipping the food with your utensils especially now with COVID..

All my homies know I hate alcohol and they know it.  I drink a little on special occasions but I'm down to kick it and chit chat.  If I go to place where it's peer pressure then I won't come back.

People might not click even with common interests regardless of relation.
